Thanks for the responses. There is no fee for router rental on my bill. Other than services, my bill shows only Multi-room DVR and STB itemized charges (plus ridiculous taxes and fees, of course).
If there is no router rental fee then you have to be grandfathered into the plan before the rental fees kicked in for newer customers.
Since you aren't getting charged a router fee if you buy a router then nothing would change other then the fact that you will own the router. Turning in the current one after you buy a new one won't change a thing within your bill.
Keep in mind you can buy the rev. i for $74.99 right now, but the newest Gateway router is slowly starting to be rolled out now. It might be selling for $149.99 in select markets right now, but its far better then the rev. i and dual band.

If you were paying the fee for rental, it would go away.

Verizon leases the router for $5 per month which you should see on your bill.

Thank you, SinCara. I have had FIOS for a number of years, so I guess that I am "grandfathered". I have no router rental fee, and also have three free digital to analog converters for my older TVs. Also, I don't plan to buy a Verizon router if it won't lower my monthly fee - not even the newer one. I have had an 802.11n access point for a couple of years. I just purchased a 802.11ac dual band router that my new iPhone 6 can access. I have yet to set it up - because it won't be as easy to set up as the access point was, since I'll have to disable DHCP on one or the other. I'm a retired, not very well versed, trial and error guy, but I'll eventually figure it out. This stuff keeps me busy, and I enjoy playing with it so that I can keep up with my techie grandchildren. 🙂
