If you desire to, you can set what DNS Servers that you want your computers to use on your computer(s).

After more days of on and off tinkering with the various things that were posted here and at SevenForums, I've come to believe this could be more of a driver/OS issue more than anything else. I also plugged my laptop via a spare cat5 cable and did not see it disconnect when my desktop did, so it definitely cannot be a Verizon issue as I first suspected over a month ago.
