Now this is what is going on. If you guys have the normal everyday PWS (personal Web space) I am sorry that its being changed to not allow ftp there any longer, Its only for PWS not across the network. right now there isn't anything regarding implementing anything other than removal of the FTP from PWS. So right now the only way is to use the Site builder starting 8/21/2011

Techman28,

The problem is not so much that FTP access is being revoked but that no viable option has been offered as its replacement.  The problems with sitebuilder have been very well documented on these forums.   There are probably hundreds of thousands of Verizon customers who have websites up on PWS that we have paid for and, from what I can tell, will continue to be paying for even if we have no effective access method to it.

That Verizon has had nothing, absolutely nothing, to say about this after the number of complaints that have been seen on these forums (which, I'm sure, are not the only place that complaints have been made) is nothing short of shocking.

Verizon will lose customers over this, and should.    It is not unreasonable to expect that webspace should be directly accessible by the most commonly used methods.   If they don't like open FTP then declaring SFTP as its replacement would have been reasonable.   As things stand we, the customers, are left hanging and are paying for something we can no longer effectively use.   This is the result of Verizon's decision making and those who can depart almost certainly will.

I pay $6 a month for extra web space. Will I still have FTP acess? I need to know ASAP!

With over 45,000 employees on strike and the tens of thousands of those outsourced jobs in India and Indonesia and other places, the current managment of Verizon cares not for it consumers who have personal webspace; but rather how they can get more money out of us by removing the FTP for only the free webspace consumers while keeping it in place for those that pay extra for their space and domain names. It is all about money. I personally moved my site to horizon-host.com and have a ton more the space (like 200 times as much) than I did at verizon.

It appears they are ready for the move tonight at midnight. The server since I have a site with verizon in 2004 has always been at Greenwich Mean Timie while this week, it moved over to East Daylight Savings Time. Even without all their IT people, management plans on screwing the consumer none the less.

I already sold my Verizon stock last month and beat the down trend (thanks verizon)...will not get back into this market as it is too volitile. The only decision I now have is whether or not to remove my two landlines and the family's 4 cell phones all with Verizon or Verizon wireless....if I was a betting man (and I am) would say it is at 6/5 that  I will stay.......5/6 that I will not...

Verizon could care about what is said in the forums. Nobody from top management gets anywhere near these forums. If you are really unhappy about the decision, don't call Verizon, and don't vent your frustrations in these forums, because neither has any impact. Write to Verizon's CEO. That's what I did (and it didn't even get me a written a reply).

The objective these days is maximize revenue while minimizing cost. So that's why the Newsgroups went, and that's why personal web space has been replace with a product that is so bad that most users won't bother, and soon that will go away as well (or Verizon will find a way to charge for it)...

As I pointed out in my letter to Verizon's CEO's, that now makes two services that Verizon used to provide as part of my Internet Service that I will have to pay to replace. I will fund the replacements by ending my landline service, and if Verizon expects that service will be replaced by Verizon Wireless Service, think again. Decisions have costs, and as long as we as users aren't willing to make choices that will alter the economics of the decision, don't expect Verizon to do anything differently. Fortunately my landline service is not bundled with my FiOS services, so I am free to end that service without penalty.

Verizon gets upset when I name names and addresses, but if you want to write to Verizon's top management, go to www.verizon.com, and click on about us. Follow the links for Investors, and finally to SEC filings. The names and mailing addresses of Verizon's Corporate Office are in the SEC filings, which are a matter of public record for any company whose shares are publicly traded in the USA..

Guess contrary to what has been posted, the FTP is still active at 5:34pm edt on Sunday 21st of August. Either they have a changed their minds OR someone forgot to pull the plug. We will know more tomorrow if this is for real or not. You would think a business would keep their customers informed on things of this nature but I guess things are tough out there and to find people that actually care for their consumers is hard to find. A simple email (like the one that they sent out in July) would be all they need to do but they chose otherwise.

Till tomorrow.

Probably the person who was suppose to pull it, was on strike coverage.

Here it is, Monday 22nd and they still have yet to pull the plug. Was this all a joke? Don't get me wrong as it is nice to still have it working but we are going through the motion as if the rug will be pulled out in any second. Why don't they send another email out like in July to let us in are what is going on? It would only seem to be good business. Anything less is a true indication of their inability to run their business in a proper manner. So what's up doc? Are u pulling the plug or not???? Inquiring minds want to know.

Well, I just checked with a friend and he can still FTP to his site, but I can't to mine. (I haven't been able to for 5 days now.)

I wonder if they're doing this alphabetically? My home page starts with the letter B and my friend's page starts with the letter R.

Mine is still operational on this August 23rd. Guess it had something to do with their detection program if you are no able to use yours. When creating my site back in 2004, I used FTp and not the sitebuilder. It flew under the radar as when I received the notice in July, I called Verizon and spent about an hour with someone in the Far East on the other line. He came back to tell me that I have never used the free web space. I sent him the link to my site and he knew I had it. They have no explanations as to why but I have to say that some of their users will be able to go on without any dfference.

I personally could not take the chance of being shut down. I posted up a notice of why we were not open and the new site's address. In fact, I repeated the address about 10 times and change the color of the font to the color of the background. In this way, when those spiders go out searching the net, they will be sent to my new site a few times. I already have 2nd billing to my old site's billing on google search. It will only be a matter of time before I overtake the orginal number one.

You may also use a tracking program (I use Extreme Tracking) that will display from the site that referred them to you...I sent out an email to those sites and had them change the my address so that will help also.

It is a lot of work created by this fiasco but it all ended well as I got out of the stock market before the recent downturn and I have found a host that has way more services and webspace that I will ever need so in a way, I am better off for Verizon taking away service and not reducing the price (which to me is a price hike).
