Odd repeat key behavior signing into router

I accessed my Verizon router yesterday to turn on UPNP, which seemed to work well, and let my various Macs see each other through Back To My Mac.

Today, when I went back to check on the settings for the router, after I successfully entered my username, I went to enter my password, but for every letter I entered, it would type 3. Not sure if they were the same letters, as they show as bullets, but by the time I'd entered my 7 letter pasword, there were over a dozen letters/bullets entered. And to no surprise, it rejected it as a valid PW. (???) I tried typing the qword in a word processor and pasting it in but, no difference. Tried on two other Macs in my house. Same results.

Anyone have ANY idea what's going on here??

That's normal, the router does that as a security measure so that if anyone is standing over your shoulder they can't tell how many characters you typed.  You should simply type out the password and trust that you typed it correctly, if it fails several times, then I would be remiss to tell you to factory reset the router after you turned on upnp, but that is what you may have to do.

after a factory reset you can set the password to be whatever you want it to be  -   But just remember, the password field naturally displays more characters than you typed.   So when you type one letter, it will display three asterisks or two.   that is NORMAL.   Try the password again, type it slowly and deliberately and if you still can't access then do a factory reset and remember to adjust all the settings that you configured, as a factory reset will erase any advanced configurations you have done.

to factory reset, go to the back of the FiOS router, find the reset button - use a paperclip or similiarly small and thin object, press the reset button and hold it in, count to 20 and then release the button.  wait for the internet light to turn amber, and then ultimately green.  Try to access the router again.

It is a 'security' feature, plain and simple.

Thanks very much for the help. That did the trick. It's been a while since I've run across that security feature and forgot all about it. Appreciate the prompt response!
