Over 24 hrs to perform a 10 gig back up?

Fios for the most part has worked well for me until lately....I have a BIG issue with the proported speed that I'm supposed to be getting 20 down and 5 up. If that is the case, please tell me why it has taken me WELL OVER 24 HRS to perform a 10 gig back up/data transfer? At that rate, I can't imagine how long it would take to try to backup my whole hard drive.

The slowness can't blame on my computer it's working fine and has been "optimized" using your verizon tool. It also can't be blamed on MY server in Houston where I'm downloading from. I've had a server admin at the colo stand by and had him run connectivity tests. I've had them reboot the ftp server just in case. No....my equipment is working fine. The problem/issue I believe is Fios  CONNECTIVITY speed. I was told by Verizon that you do not throttle the bandwidth. It sure doesn't appear that way. Please advise and thank you in advance.

Are you backing up indavidual fios, or a backed up file like a .gho, or a ISO?It takes longer to upload 5000 file, then one file at the same size.

Let me break down the speeds for you. When it comes to speeds they are in bits, and not bytes. This is the way every ISP is. So with that this is how it works out.

10 gigabytes = 80gigbits

20megabits/5megabits =  2.5megabytes/625kilobytes

I would sugest useing filezilla FTP program, and have it set to 3 or 4 maximum simultaneous transfers. If you use windows explorere it onlydoes the files one at a time.

I'm using the latest ver of Ipswitch WSFTP. I'm backing up a folder containing several sub folders. No file in any subfolder is larger than 300k. It's basically a  single website...not my whole hard drive... In any case there is no way that 10 gigs should take longer than 4 to 6 hrs....let alone 24 hrs on a fiber connection. It says I still have 10 hrs left to complete...there is def a problem....and I see the current speed is 13Kbps....which ain't good.... It should be in the HUNDREDS range...not 2 digit range...

No that sounds about right. When your uploading individual files like that it runs 10 times slower. I have been creating websites for years, and have been using FTP for even longer. 1 file at 500mb will upload faster then 500 files at 1mb. It the way the FTP protocol works. It makes a separate connection for each one. And with all your files running in at 300k each, it does not have the time to even hit full upload speed. It would take you about 5 sec a file. Then it drops the link, and makes a new link, uploads the file in 5 sec, drops again. Its the way FTP works.

"1 file at 500mb will upload faster then 500 files at 1mb. "

I understand that...but I'm DOWNLOADING NOT UPLOADING...and I'm supposed to be getting 20 down...

A friend of mine in another location using Fios did a file transfer of about the same size. I was there....we had dinner, played a few vids, watched some tube...viola...it was done....nowhere NEAR 24 hrs...

Have you checked speedtest.net or another speedtest site?

Downloading works the same as uploading, if you are downloading a lot of small files its going to take forever. such as my site I am running now. Its about 15mb+ give or take. But if I have my FTP set to 1 at a time. It will take a good 30 min or more. Your best bet is to use a FTP client and up the Max transfers. But downloading should be faster then uploading.

And there is no way someone can transfer 10gb (individual files) over FTP in  a short time. When I download a OS from Microsoft it takes about a hour at Max speeds for a single, 4gig file.

I've done everything I can think of. Also use the verizon "optimize" tool...nothing seems to work. It appears to be throttling.

the operative phrase in your post is "short time".....it's now going on 30 hrs... and my rate has dropped to 9.5...there IS a problem

VZ doesn't throttle anything.  Check your FTP client settings or something.
