Pay for Quantum Router?

I currently have FIOS 35/35.  If I upgrade to FIOS quantum 50/50 (at $10/month additional) I have to buy a router for $200???  I thought the routers were supplied by Verizon.....I don't recall paying for my current router.  Can I upgrade to quantum and keep my current router?

Welcome to the forums.  You're talking to other customers here.  Your question is best answered by Verizon.  To reach them, you need to call or chat with them.  You could also use the VZ Direct forum over on DSLreports.com.

Verizon now rents or sells routers.  They no longer give them away.  This started about a year or so ago.  Sometimes they are available at a discounted price with an upgrade to higher speed tiers.  Sometimes not.  You'll need to contact them to find out what offers are available to you.

If you got an Actiontec years ago it is possible that Verizon considers it yours.  I purchased a Quantum router to replace my Actiontec during a sale last winter.  I got different stories when about my Actiontec when I contacted Verizon by phone.  The folks at the VZ Direct forum were the most helpful; they looked up my account and confirmed that I owned the Actiontec.  I suggest you ask there rather than the phone or chat reps.

The Actiontec Rev I ("Advanced Gigabit router" with the red band) is perfectly capable of handling speeds well above 50/50. If you have one of these models and don't care about dual-band or guest WiFi, you don't need to get a Quantum router.

Good Luck.

Routers are supplied upon getting service, however Verizon never gave anyone routers to keep. If you want to upgrade to a newer router then they either make you buy it or rent it.

It's hard to answer if you can upgrade and use your current router. It depends on what model/revision router you are using.

If its a Rev. i with the red band then yes for sure. If its an old g band router then you're probably not going to get even close to 50/50 on wifi.

You can also use a 3rd party router.

You also might want to check your account online because Verizon is offering quantum gateway's for free (they will want it back though) to a lot of people if one upgrades to 75/75 or higher. I just saw the promo today under add/change services. I already bought one though so useless for me.

Your old router will work just fine with the 50/50 service and as you were supplied it by Verizon in the past you should be grandfathered in for ongoing use.

I'm now on 75/75 service and was using the router they gave me 6 years back until it failed last winter at which time they gave me a new rev I actiontec as a replacement.  It's still their property to be returned if I stop service but I wasn't charged for the replacement and am also not paying rental on it.

I visited my account to upgrade and website said verizon has special offer if you upgrade to 50M or higher you will get quantum router for free.. I upgraded to 75/75 but was told I will not get router for free even though website shows promo. Very disappointed at this.
