It depends on whether it's signal strength or Verizon's wired speed, or your computer configuration.
I use an Amped_Wireless repeater / amplifier, "ampedwireless.com"
I have plaster walls in the house and the wireless signal is half strength in the next room over from Verizon's wireless transmiter.
I have a model SR300: High Power Wireless-300N Smart Repeater that will repeat it's signal and transmit it full strength through the rest of the house.
I, too, have had problems with speed in the last couple of weeks that seem to have been resolved on Verizon's end (nothing changed on my end.)
But, still, I've never gotten more than 11.6 during light traffic hours. with a 15/5.
The equipment that I received from Verizon is a MI424WR router.

In addition, WMM QoS is required for higher Wireless N speeds. This should be on by default on all routers but sometimes it isn't.

How can I verify that WMM QoS is activated on my Actiontec Rev. I. ? There are no "rules" existing in the QoS table, only the ability to add same.

I too am paying for the 50/25 quantum speeds and have rarely gotten close to 50 on the download side. Typically downloads are in the 20s, maybe the low 30s with an occasional spike to 40. The uploads on the other hand tend to be higher, usually in the 30s.
A week or so back, I called Verizon and they had me connect my computer using the Ethernet cable and not the wireless connection. Did the "optimizer" and ran the speedtests a couple of times. The Verizon agent concluded is was my computer's problem after looking at some numbers. They were then going to give me some info to call my computer manufacturer with and I said forget it. I think they were full of it. I only have one computer, but speedtest results are similar on my house's iPads and iPhones. Of course, with all those devices sharing the same wireless connection, there is bound to be some reduction in maximum speeds - at least I would think so. Regardless, I am perfectly happy if speeds stay at 25/25 and above - at times during the past few weeks, that has been a big problem - see some of the other threads on this board, particularly the one about Montgomery county MD and the DC Metro area.

i figured it out.
Go onto your router the crappy M142 one. If you can change your router to only 802.11N . Then it gives you the wireless love you so desire. You just have to change your password from WEP to a different one. But it works. i sat on the phone with this guy from verizon who said he had a bachelors in engineering and all this mumbo jumbo and he didn't tell me that. He said i wouldn't be able to get it. Well i just accomplished it. and i did a speed test and i'm at 58.6 mbps.
So i hope it helps. and i hope all your devices are N ready. If they are. You are in heaven.
amen. took me 2 hours to figure this out cause i was having the same exact problem.

Thank you, Hubrisnxs for your post. This newer Speed Test was a great help http://speedtest.verizon.net/fios300
Just upgraded to a 75/35 Speed, Verizon not bothering to mention this newer test when you upgrade, Serious oversight if you ask me.
The older version as you mentioned, cannot handle the high upload speeds on FiOS. When older version is used, it
will show less than half the speed your expecting. You saved me the aggravation of calling and having to jump through all the
hoops
to get an answer.

I'm tired of buying new equipment and am thinking a different provider might be the way to go.
I'm having an issue with Verizon's router. I use the same machine at work and at home. At work we put in Optimum's 50Mps package. I redline on speedtest.net, easily getting the advertised speeds. I brought the machine home, sit RIGHT BESIDE THE VZ ROUTER and am getting speeds of less than before I upgraded. I ran the optimizer tool and speeds increased slightly. When I hardwire the connection it redlines, so clearly the speed is coming in; it's just not being transferred through Verizon's wireless router. Not sure why, since other providers have wireless routers that support the higher speeds. The "we only guarantee wired speeds" is nonsense. They advertise that you need more speed because of more mobile devices.
I'm going to try to contact VZ tomorrow to have them supply a different router. If that doesn't work, I may bail.
I like FiOS because of the TV, but TV's a time waster. If I have to waste more time and money because I'm not getting what I paid for, perhaps the wiser move is simply to go to a provider who does what they say...

If you guys are using Verizon Routers REV A-E then you are using Wireless G.
Wireless G has a Signal rate of 54mbs, but is half duplex and with overhead and encryption, your MAX should be around 25MBs. Average is about 16-24MBs I would say
If you have Rev F then you will want to change to WPA2 Encryption. the Default WEP encryption limits you to G Speeds, WPA2 AES encryptin, will allow you to get much closer to 60 and 65 max.
If you have REV G and or I then you should also take advantage ot WPA2 with AES encryption, and you should be able to get higher speeds as well. Verizon offers the Revision I router, it's their best router. It's a single band Wireless N that operates at 2.4ghz only, and can get upto 130mbs
For the price, I wouldn't buy it, I would instead go on amazon and look for a Dual Radio Wireless N router that can do upto 300 + MBS.
Or if you have your own wireless N router lying around, then use this configuration to add your wireless N router and take better advantage of higher Wireless Speeds.
You can see what revision router if you look at the service tag. It will either say very clearly REV A-I on it, or you can look at the serial number, and the 4th letter is your Revision,.

All I want to do is go back to my old plan. I have only had Quantum for 2 weeks and have tried several times to return to old plan. My wireless speed is now much slower and tv has been behaving erratically since upgrade. Every Verizon agent gives me the runaround and says they cannot help with my problem. I have been through every troubleshooting list and nothing works. WORST OF ALL, I specifically asked a Verizon chat agent the following:
{edited for privacy}
The wireless speed went down from 22 M average to 16M average. This is unacceptable. On top of that, Verizon tacked on 4 months to our service plan at an extra $35 per month. Total ripoff. I have called on phone and Verizon says there is nothing they can do to return me to my previous plan. They have not heard the last of this.

Read the post(S) right before yours, and look at this thread.
http://forums.verizon.com/t5/FiOS-Internet/Why-your-Wi-Fi-is-slow/m-p/534451#U534451
I too lost the ability to switch back to the 25/25 or 35/35 plans, because they are no longer available. Just as the original TV tiers are no longer available, some people held onto them for quite a long time, but I wanted the newer plans, so I upgraded.
Many things can cause your wireless connection to slow down. Read the posts found in the above link, and it will provide some ideas. When you upgraded, did anything change? Did you change your router, and what model do you currently have. Rev-A-D will be slower than E or above. Rev. I being the latest.
Plug a Laptop or PC directly into the router and run your speed test.
Wired connection on 75/35
Wired connection on 150/65, not available in all areas.
If you had it and wanted it, you needed to hold onto it.
