Proper Wireless Settings for Optimal FIOS Performance

Evening all,

I currently am signed up for 35/20 Internet service, but I dont see anything close to this with my laptop running with a wireless connection. At best I am seeing 13/13 wirelessly. I have my wireless setup for WPA-PSK at this time. I hide the SSID of my wireless router. My question is what should I be setting my overall wireless setting for the best performance from my FIOS service?

Thanks,
Steve

Three  things. First of all make sure you have turned on support for 802.11g, and that your laptop is using 802.11g, as opposed to 802.11b, and make sure there are no 802.11b users on your network. Simultaneous support for b and g is permitted, but it does degrade performance.

Next run Verizon's high speed or similar optimizer to insure that you have enough, and large enough buffer to support the high speeds you have available.

REboot the router. The router software is an infinite loop, and over time, it tends to lose buffer space, and table space which can degrade performance. I make it a practice to reboot mine once a month unless something (like a power outage) has done it for me.

Finally measure the performance with your wireless network running unsecured. My recollection  WPA encryption is done in software on the Actiontec router. The time it takes for the software encryption/decryption may prevent the router from providing maximum performance (don't leave your wireless network unsecured, but turning off WPA and WEP long enough to run the test isn't likely to allow any unwanted guests on board.
