I believe that Greenwave Systems manufacturered the G1100 router.  Does anyone know of a number/email to use to report issues/bugs with the G1100's firmware?   Perhaps the DNS issue could be resolved in a future firmware release.

The firmware will be specific to Verizon since thee cutomize it for passwords, wifi keys etc.

As stated earlier getting a dns server of 192.168.1.1 is quite correct.

Did you check that the router is in fact getting an external dns server address when it' gets it's dhcp assignation on the wan port?

Yes, on the WAN side, the router is getting the following DNS addresses:

71.243.0.12
68.237.161.12

Just to be clear, I am not having any issues resolving external DNS entries,  my issue is specific to user-defined entries for use on my LAN.

Having same issue, spent over an hour with tech support.

The tech mentioned Greenwave.

I noticed a company named Greenwave is bragging about this router at

http://www.greenwavesystems.com/verizon-fios-quantum-gateway-available/

I've sent them an email , not expecting much back

- - - - - - - -

I've also tried ssh'ing into the router - there's a busybox interface.

ssh admin@192.168.1.1
admin@192.168.1.1's password:

I tried nslookup <alocalhost>.<mylocaldomain> with no luck

/ $ nslookup criticat.myhome
Server:    127.0.0.1
Address 1: 127.0.0.1 localhost

nslookup: can't resolve 'criticat.myhome': System error

I also tried adding 192.168.1.1 to the nslookup command, no luck
/ $ nslookup criticat.myhome 192.168.1.1
Server:    192.168.1.1
Address 1: 192.168.1.1

nslookup: can't resolve 'criticat.myhome': System error

The /etc/resolv.conf in the busybox has

/ $ less /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 127.0.0.1
search myhome

I believe the problem is most likely the firmware on the router, but don't have any real proof. I can't tell if a resolver is running.

From a linux system . . .

cat /etc/resolv.conf
# Generated by NetworkManager
search myhome myhome. localdomain
nameserver 192.168.1.1

host criticat.myhome
Host criticat.myhome not found: 2(SERVFAIL)

The host command works 5x5 for any DNS on the outside (i.e. . . .

host google.com
google.com has address 216.58.217.110
google.com has IPv6 address 2607:f8b0:4004:809::1007
google.com mail is handled by 20 alt1.aspmx.l.google.com.
google.com mail is handled by 30 alt2.aspmx.l.google.com.
google.com mail is handled by 10 aspmx.l.google.com.
google.com mail is handled by 40 alt3.aspmx.l.google.com.
google.com mail is handled by 50 alt4.aspmx.l.google.com.

I also am pretty sure the problem is inherent to the router, because the "diagnostic" ping also won't resolve local DNS's, but certainly works fine with IP addresses.

Its as if DNS resolution on the router is not there.

The tech suggested a factory reset.  I have to coordinate the "down time" with my "users" (primarily a spunky 11 year old), but I'm doubtful that's the fix.

GREENWAY or FIOS, are you listening?

At this point, I'm figuring my options are static DNS and pushing around a host file or returning the router to Verizon and paying for my own router that meets my needs.

Having same issue, local DNS appears to not exist, even on the router

Ah, that is a totally different question and you'd certainly need to use 192.168.1.1 as the dns server for that to work, presuming that the device names you are adding are on the verizon router's subnet?

How are you adding the dns names?  By selecting a dhcp  assigned entry and changing the name or adding a new dns entry to the dns server?

Do you have any entries on the dns server page?

Logon to the router

select advanced

select dns server - you should get a list of all assigned devices with names

I'm adding user-defined DNS entries using the following steps:

0. Log in to the administrative web page for the FiOS - G1100 router

1. Goto Advanced -> DNS Server

2. Click Add DNS Entry

3. Input a hostname + IP Address (e.g. printserver 192.168.1.4)

4. Click Apply

Once these steps are completed, however, I am unable to ping any entries made (e.g. printserver).   I have also tried using nslookup to no avail.

Can you ping any of the entries that were not added by yourself?

I can ping IP addresses, but I cannot ping any LAN-based DNS names.

I have about 10-15 hosts, DHCP is handing out IP's and recording the hostnames correctly as seen on both the "my network" and "dns server" pages.

I've set the "local domain" on the router's system config page to "myhome"

From the router's 'diagnostics', I can ping 192.168.1.155 (as example)

I manually make an entry on the DNS server page of xyz and assign it 192.168.1.155 I cannot ping xyz.myhome from the router's "diagnostics"  I have a red "Adress Resolution Failed" (Pretty much sums up the issue)

BTW logging into the busybox command process on the router (enable local SSH) and trying nslookup directly on the router also fails.

host command from linux fails

ITS LOCAL DNS, router has the host names, they show up in "My Network"  as well as on the DNS server page.

Spent over an hour with a Verizon tech, who seemed to understand the problem.  He drove enough to see the issues, but I think the problem is with Greenwave, not verizon.

One last step I have is to hard reset the router and see if it happens before I do any configuring.  Don't expect anything, but worth a shot.  Gotta schedule some system down time with the kids 🙂
