RECEIVING email with LARGE attachments

All,

I have searched the Verizon site, withou luck, trying to find the maximum incoming email size that Verizon will accept.  I recently had a colleague send me a pdf file attachment that was 15.4 MB and it was bounced by Verizon.  Everyone seems to be locked into the maximum size attachement you can SEND without ever quoting the maximum size you can RECEIVE.  In fact the Verizon support area is totally worthless on this issue.  The FAQ they have that is SPECIFICALLY titled "How large of an attachment can I send or receive through email?", only addresses the maximum size you can SEND.

So, does anyone here have any idea?  It obviously isn't 20MB send and 20MB receive.

Thanks in Advance,

RRS

Additional data... I had my colleague send the 15.4 MB pdf file to my gmail account where I forwarded it to my Verizon account.  The results of the forwarding was the following message:

"Technical details of permanent failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 552 552 5.3.4 a message size of 20483 kilobytes exceeds the size limit of 20480 kilobytes computed for this transaction (state 18)."

I'm not sure how the 15.4 grew into 20.48 but that was the message... just 3 KB over.  So I decided to test the system.  I compressed the PDF file into a zip folder and sent it.  The compressed PDF had compressed down to 14.8 MB.  Once again an error message.  The message follows:

"Technical details of permanent failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 552 552 5.3.4 a message size of 20483 kilobytes exceeds the size limit of 20480 kilobytes computed for this transaction (state 18).
"

So much for compressing the file.

Interestingly... a short time later both of the files were delivered delivered to my inbox at Verizon.net.

What in the WORLD is going on here?

I did forward a link for this thread to Verizon Employees, and also hope to get an offical response to this. This would be a good one for everyone to know. It may also depend on how much is in your mailbox, and also if you are leaving mail on the server. I belive there is an overall limit on a users personal file space.

I believe the max email size is 10mb. Most pop mail servers are between 5mb and 10mb. The only time you will be able to be larger is on a corporate mail server. But even with that most are still capped at 10mb.

I remember when it was 5mb. I was looking for offical word on this so we would all know the limits and what to expect. It is hard to get offical anything. That is why there are so many of us proviing un offical support.

God I remember back in '98 I think when I works for a ISP, and everyone was sending elf bowling via email. And that was 6mb. God that killed our mail servers.
