Up until about 3 weeks ago hovering over my wireless network icon in the system tray showed wireless speeds somewhere between 36 and 54 mbps.
Now I'm getting no greater than 18 mbps and frequently as low as 2 mbps.
I'm a FIOS customer with the 10/2 package.
Resetting (i.e. powering down and repowering) the wireless router helped initially but that trick nets me no results now.
Also, moving the wireless router proximal to the laptop yields no improvement.
Further, a second laptop in the house is not experiencing these issues.
I'm thinking my laptop's internal wireless card has crapped out?

#1 What is the exact brand, model, and ver of your router?
For example: Actiontec, MI-424-WI, Rec C.
#2 What is the brand and model of your wireless NIC?

The wireless router is a Netgear WGR614.
Don't know, off the top of my head, the brand and model # for the wireless card as it's an internal card in a Gateway laptop.

the speed that you are mentioning.. (54mb, 36mb and such) do not really refer to the speed of you connection. At least not directly.
Those numbers reflect the signal strength. For example 54mb means that you have full signal strenght and you can operate at the full speed capible wirelessly. 36 means that you only have 4 bars of strength, and 2 means that you are barely connected.
Likely
- your router needs rebooting
- you have some kind of interfearance from some outside source.
- the wireless in your computer is starting to go
- the wireless in your router is starting to go.
from what you have said. I would guess number 3.
