Recently upgraded to 75mbps...

...and I'm getting nowhere near that speed. I upgraded from 25/5 to the 75/75 Quantam, along with a free upgraded router. All I did was switch out the cables and power sources for the router, and the new router started working just fine.

Excited to see what the speed test would show, I'm actually getting lower numbers on this new router/service than with the old router/service. Like I said, nothing changed but the router--the connections are all the same--but I'm seeing worse connection speeds. Test by Ookla used to have me at right next to 25mbps regularly, but when I switched out to the new router, my connection isn't getting above 18mbps.

Is there a period where I have to wait for Verizon to notice that I have the new router hooked up to get the bump in speed?

Just call Verizon.

Don't have the ability to for the next few hours--thought there was a quick answer so I posted the question.

Unplug the router for a minute or so then plug it back in.

Although it can't hurt to try that I'd be surprised if it makes any difference.

What the OP could try, that might help, is upluging the ONT, waiting a few minutes, and then plugging it back in.  That might kick start the upgrade in speeds.

If that doesn't make any difference, then calling or online chatting with Verizon support is the next step.

No idea how to unplug ONT...no idea what ONT means.

And my God, it took me around 20-30 minutes to get through the automated voice prompts when I called Verizon. I'm currently on hold. I feel like if I was irate, I would've used my phone as a projectile...lol.

EDIT: So I was finally able to get through to someone after an hour, and on the call, I was able to get my router speed up to 86mbps when I was directly connected to the router via an ethernet cord. But what I don't understand is, why would my old G router have a better signal than my new N router? The woman on the phone mentioned that it's probably the wireless signal, but regardless of where I test the signal--right next to the router or in the basement--I get the same speeds. She mentioned that I should try and change the channel, but I thought the routers were designed to choose a channel with the least amount of background noise.

Wish I could just directly connect to the router...that would fix all of my problems...

ONT is the optical network terminal. Its the big white box that feeds the signal to your house.

Wifi speeds will always vary and the actiontec routers arent the best. Verizon will be releasing a new ac router soon, but of course to upgrade to it wont be free. You can also always get a 3rd party router and use it.

The routers should choose the best channel, but I know mine never does. It always stays on 1 channel unless I change it.

You can download, install, and run inSSIDer which is a great tool for choosing the best channel. It lets you see network congestion and what channel everyone around you is using. http://www.techspot.com/downloads/5936-inssider.html

Wireless network cards in your pc can play a part in speeds. If you were getting better results with g band then its possible the network card just isnt that great on n band and you'll only see a max of certain speeds with it.

I switched to wired myself because I'd get good wireless speeds during the day, but at night they'd drop because there's just to many people in my neighborhood all on the same band/channels.

Another thing to do is put the routers settings from compatibility mode to performance mode. This will make it an n band only router so if you have any old devices that still need to run off of g band they wont work. Changing to performance mode should help, but how much of course depends on other factors.

It's also possible if your router isnt getting good range even next to your computer the router is bad. I have the rev. i and I can get good signal even outside of my house.
