Replaceing an actiontec router

We've had the same actiontec mi424wr router for years(rev c) it intermittantly losses wifi, I'm gonna replace it, but I have a few questions;

What is the latest version actiontec?

Do I have to get one through Verizon or can i source one elsewhere?

Do I have to get an actiontec or can i use any MOCA router?

Can i use AC1750 quantum router even though i dont have quantum?

Would it be worth changing to an AC1750?

Thank you for your input.

If you have TV service, you will want to get a router that Verizon supports.

If not, you can use whatever router you wish.

The Quantum gateway is the latest router.

You can purchase from anywhere you wish.

I would defiantely suggest using your own router. I've used my own for 2 years now and would never go back.

While the above poster is true, you can still use your own router while keeping TV service active. The steps are pretty simple:

  1. Run ethernet from your ONT box
  2. Call support and have them enable the "ONT Ethernet Interface"
  3. Plug in your new router, ensure you can connect to the internet
  4. Keep your old actiontec around, and plug the "WAN" port of the actiontec into a "LAN" port of your personal router.

Before you connect new router, log in to old router and release IP.

Otherwise new router will delay in getting IP.

If you do this you will also need to connect the coax port of the Actiontec to the the house coax network so the the router can talk to the STBs

You should also forward the Verizon specific ports to the wan ip address of the Actiontec router - you can find those ports in the pf rules of the Actiontec- they are the unmodifieable rules at the start of the list..

I am told that possibly VOD doesn't work in this setup.  My network here is setup this way and works fine but I never use VOD
