I was renting a FNE, but don't need it anymore after setting up a router as an AP (and getting much better throughput). Can I just return the extender to the Verizon store near my house to have it taken off of my bill, or do I have to wade through the miasma of calling customer service first?

I would personally call so a return order is created for documentation purposes. You can return equipment a UPS store or they will ship you a box and return label.

With lots of stores closed, try contacting Verizon before going anywhere. Their chat reps can be very helpful and easier to reach then the phone reps. Their twitter support is very good, as is VZ Direct at DSLreports.com.
Good Luck.
