how easy is it to connect a cheap wireless n router  and what are some recommendation cheap routers

"Easy" seems a bit subjective and elusive.  However typing "second router" into the Community search box at the top of every page returns about 6000 discussions on this subject, many quite recent.  Let us know how you make out.

Hello hydeyoshi,

Here are some things you can do to get better wireless performance from your router.

1. Reposition the router.

2. Use only one wireless standard. (Not mixed mode)

3.  Change the wireless channel in the wireless settings.

4.  Change the operating frequency of your router 20Mhz / 40Mhz

(this probably can't be done on non 802.11n routers)

5. You can also upgrade your wireless adapters on your laptop.

On the newegg website they have a number of cheap wireless 802.11n routers below $50.  They also have expensive 802.11n routers above that but have more positive reviews. Perhaps they have a router that meets your needs.

If your getting 17/15 from your closest speed test servers then perhaps getting a wireless 802.11n router won't change that because it has to do with how fast your packets go through the internet network. This is something that can't be controlled by just purchasing a newer wireless standard router.

Have you tried connecting your laptop by wire to your router and testing the download/upload speed with the speedtest servers?

What are your results for the download/upload wired test?

I have the 15/5 plan FiOS internet plan and at the moment I am getting 9.5Mbps/ 4.5Mbps using the speedtest and closest servers. I know a couple of weeks back I was getting about 15/5 so it varies from time to time. I think it has to do with network congestion at the Opticial LineTerminal or just network congestion in the internet in general. I usually don't use my full bandwidth so it doesn't really bother me at the moment.

If you can, try using speed test around 3 AM local time or the time when you think the least people are using the server for the speed test.

If you use Verizon's speedtest, the time of day shouldn't matter.  They promised you a certain speed. Between your home and their sever, you should get that speed regardless of the time.

If you are using a non Verizon speedtest site such as Speedtest or Speakeasy time of day would be a factor.  Depending on the city you select, network congestion will effect the results to varying degrees. Verizon's speed promise is only to the internet, not all points on it.  So using non-Verizon tests may provide useful information, but it tells you more about internet congestion than your connection to the internet.
