Slow connection speed with FIOS

I have the Fios service. I'm paying for their 50/25 service, but I am only reallizing 5.85 download, and 5.74 upload speeds? I know that speeds can vary based on the time of day. I receive the same speed at 2 AM. I have also noticed that on ocassion, my On Demand TV shows are pixalated with no sound. This happened just last night.

I've spoken with tech support about my concerns, and their solution was to send me a new router, which I have installed. However, my speeds are the same?

My question is this; should I be satisifed with this service level? It's a long way from 50/25, but maybe it's the normal speed? I live in the Baltimore area, so it's not like I live in a rural area.

If it is, why is Verizon advertising 50/25? Who is actually realizing such speeds?

In reading other messages, I see a reference to an ONT? What is that?

As VUser asked is it wired or wireless?

If wired then yes you should be getting more. If you are testing with wireless test on wired and see if you get the advertised speeds. If you do then you are getting what you pay for and is a wireless issue which could be anything causing lower speeds. Your network adapter in your computer, an old g router being used instead of n, the router set to compatibility mode instead of performance mode (if using rev. i), the router needing to be changed to a different channel (1, 6 or 11) because of neighborhood congestion, network congestion, interference within your home from other devices, a combination of things, etc...

If you arent getting anything near the speeds you are paying for on wired when testing it  (in which case I would call them) then you may need a new ONT (Optical Network Terminal) aka the big white box either instead of outside of your house where all of the wires coming in from the main fios line go to. It could very well be something else.
