Slow download speeds - Maryland FIOS

I have had a problem with download speed since 1/16/11.  90% of my file downloads have gone from 3-4 mb/s to 100 kb/s.  My speed test to verizon shows normal speed when I use the MD server test.  When I use the fios NY server to test speed download speed is 30X slower.  I have checked everything possible on my computer and spent hours with fios support and have gotten nowhere.  At this point I have no idea what to do, just hoping there is a network/server problem outside of the verizon network that will be fixed in time.

I seems that most of my trace tests south and west are fine but north is where i have trouble.  Could mean nothing, could mean something.

Well while most of your tracerts look good for the most part. This is the most concerning point of the whole post. You are seeing packet loss between the computer and the router.

That in and of itself may be your entire issue. This leave 3 possible problems.

1. An issue with the router. I would reboot/reset the router. see if the problem continues

2. An issue with the eithernet/wireless between the computer and router. replace the ethernet cable and try again

3. A problem with the computer itself. Do you have other computers? Are they having the same issue?

Thanks for replying.

Yes I have already rebooted the router numerous times and checked all the connections.  I do have another computer on the network which is experiencing the same problems.    I did try to download files from various site today and did find that 25%-50% where at normal speeds (ex. game demo from yahoo.games. at 4mb/s).  Other game demo files at the same site download 30% slower.  I do on occasion download files from hosting sites like fileserve.com.  After 1/15 all downloads from there slowed from 4mb/s to 100 kkb/s, yet I can still upload a file there at normal speeds.  I changed my DNS server today to see if that made any difference but no change in download speed.  I think at the this point the question is what is most commonly the culprit of reducing downstream speeds between point A. their server where the file is housed and point B. ME.  If anybody can answer that for me I will send you a box of chocolates because I am all PINGED out at this point.

I live in Maryland as well and am experiencing the same problem. I started noticing the lag in my browsing last Thursday 1/20/11. Almost every tracert I do shows packet loss at the Verizon servers and/or IAD8.ALTER.NET. Verizon speedtests say that everything is fine, while every 3rd party speedtest that I'm aware of consistently shows between 1-3Mbits per second for my download speed. Streaming video fails to play continuously and webpages sometimes fail to load. I'm regularly getting between 10-20% packet loss when I ping major sites like Google and CNN. Below are typical examples of my tracert and ping (30 packets) to Google:

As of 2:30 everything seems to be back to normal. As mysteriously as the problem appear it has now disappeared. We will see if it stays that way.

Not anymore. Videos on any site I try are starting and stopping about every 20 seconds or so. And some sites just won't load.

Same speed problem here (zip: 20743)

I can't stream YouTube 360P video without frequent pausing.

I'm plugged into the router so its not wireless interference and the router has been rebooted several times.
