What is happening? Wired I got 68 mb down at peak and average 58 down and 30-34 up. About 2 hrs ago I called customer service, and moved my laptop right next to the router. I got 20 mb/s. They said it was normal, and that there might be tons of wireless interference.  Now suddenly it has decreased after running the FiOS optimizer down to this speed.

What's going on?

Important question is, which Verizon Revision did you get.   Look at the service tag and it will say Actiontec MI424 Rev __

The wireless interference might be true, usually you can change the wireless channels in the router.

Access the router by going to http://192.168.1.1  username is admin and the password is most likely is the serial number on your router for revisions A-F   (under the UPC Bar code and it is case sensitive)

Once your in, click on wireless, and then click on basic security, and the channels are item number 3.

You have to experiment here.  Try channel 1 first and put a checkmark for keep settings even after reboot. and hit apply.

Changes are immediate, so immediately test it and see if it's better.

If it's not then do the same using channels 6 and also 11.  It's not recommended to do the other channels.

Let us know what happens.

download the program InSSIDer and see how saturated the 2.4 ghz range is, and your sollution might be that you need a 5ghz router instead if it's saturated.

it will also tell you how many people are on each channel and you can pin point where you need to be on those channels.

You may also want to consider getting the new verizon router, it's Wireless N which is a stronger signal, but it's out of pocket, about 79.99.

Verizon will replace a faulty router with a like for like exchange, so if you think it's a bad router, then drop by one of the stores and exchange it.

other than that, you may also want to think about moving the router.  Most FiOS users are coax enabled internet, which means you can move it into any room in your house that has a fios tv box.   Just get a 2 way tv splitter rated 5-1000mhz or better, and you are all set.

I think we got something here. What is this?

that is looking a lot better,  20 is about what I would expect out of that revision router,  I think you could probably do better on the upload if you optimized.   When you optimize using verizons optimizer it optimizes the active connection, so if you optmized while hardwired, that is what it optimized.  It didn't do your wireless.   Do you wanna try the optimizer while connected wireless see if the upload gets better?

Did you do anything different?

I optimized while it was wireless. In addition, the 20 is my upload speed, not my download speed. Right now I'm running on channel 3. Channel 1 and 6 and 11 and everything is just as slow.

well this stands out to me.

"Increasing the the client's receive buffer (17.0 KB) will improve performance"

So client being your PC and receive sounds like download to me.

the 17k number is kinda low  my receive window is 1045440 on my pc.

If the verizon optimizer isn't increasing that, I wonder if you have windows 7 and if you right clicked and hit run as administrator before opening Internet explorer.

If you did, then try a different optimizer, like the one at http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php

After downloading it to your desktop or somewhere on your PC, make sure to right click and hit run as administator.

Very weird. It seems to have fixed itself overnight.

Any idea what is going on? Can you analyze what the above means again?
