I have one particular problem with one of my hosting servers, which just happens to be my main server that I use for my business web site and emails. I ran a traceroute and found out that it times out after 14. I've reset my IP address and it would fix the problem for a few minutes, but then it would timeout again. I am still able to access my web site through a web proxy. Can anyone shed some thoughts about what the problem might be? Thanks.

The timeouts are coming after first going through a major foreign carrier.  Not Verizon.  Probably nothing Verizon can do  about it.

Thanks so much. I actually contacted my Host and they figured out what it was. My IP was being blocked because of port scanning. If anyone can explain that to me, i would greatly appreciate it. I am unaware of what my computer was doing at the time.

Port Scanning occurs when an application attempts to search for services by scanning ports repeatably. Port scanning can be mistaken for misconfigured software (for example, SFTP or e-mail clients) trying to obtain a valid connection. Port scanning can also be triggered by vulnerability scanning tools, which often aim to look for open ports on a host that could be exploited.

If you are getting banned repeatably by your host, you may want to just double check any programs you have installed pointing to your host, and make sure there's a restriction in place for how many failed connection attempts to have before giving up. Of course, check your computer for malware, too.

Thank you for the explanation. I'm scanning for malware as I type this.
