After enabling SON I immediately started getting randomly disconnected from the router. To reconnect required rebooting the router and computer, only to have the connection stop again after a few minutes. Please help.

SON can cause this, since it intoduces band steering and access point steering. Not all devices play well with this, or support for example, DFS bands that the router is trying to steer them to. If you have problems, turn off SON, and take over the controls manually instead. Although you'll lose band steering, you can apply channels manually so they don't overlap, adjust transmit power if you want more 5Ghz usage but want the Network SSID to stay the same for both radios, and re-position and adjust transmit power to help devices choose one access point or another when you have multiple.
Hope that makes sense.
