Upgrade in FIOS service resulting in slower website response times or even blocking.

Message 1 of 6

Hopefully, someone can provide guidance on best way to troubleshoot the following -

After upgrading FIOS service and receiving new FIOS-G1100 Quantum Router.  My benchmark speed provides results equal to what was promised.

However, I have continually noticed the following:

.Inconsistant call quality with VoIP calls using my Business Skype (no difference in my configuration)

.Websites not responding or extremely long pauses before displays (refresh refresh)

----> I can solve website issues if/when I VPN and eliminates the pauses or delays.

.About 85% blockage of websites I could previously visit without problem (some may have adult content but not blocked via router setting)

I will include some tracert to view what I consider odd but curious if anything I can do to resolve myself? Especially the -Request timed out moments which seems consistent.

Your traceroutes are normal (request timeout is normal).  That doesn't mean there isn't anything wrong -- I believe there is, but it's not captured in this set of traceroutes.

I have a similar problem and really believe there's issues with the NJ routing, but I can't seem to get anyone to pay attention or listen.  I've contacted support multiple times about this and all they do is restart my router.  I've been a FIOS customer for years and this is a recent issue.

Here's some MTR data:

| Host - % | Sent | Recv | Best | Avrg | Wrst | Last |
|------------------------------------------------|------|------|------|------|------|------|
| FIOS_Quantum_Gateway.fios-router.home - 0 | 201 | 201 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 |
|lo0-100.CMDNNJ-VFTTP-317.verizon-gni.net - 37 | 83 | 53 | 0 | 1 | 18 | 0 |
| B4317.NWRKNJ-LCR-22.verizon-gni.net - 43 | 75 | 43 | 2 | 6 | 16 | 7 |
| No response from host - 100 | 41 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| 0.ae2.GW10.EWR6.ALTER.NET - 37 | 83 | 53 | 4 | 4 | 10 | 4 |
| 157.130.91.86 - 37 | 83 | 53 | 4 | 4 | 16 | 4 |
| nyk-bb4-link.telia.net - 37 | 83 | 53 | 4 | 4 | 7 | 4 |
| nyk-b5-link.telia.net - 37 | 83 | 53 | 5 | 6 | 13 | 6 |

Notice the packet loss.  Even without packet loss, these NJ devices often have terrible spiky pings, as seen in the following:

| Host - % | Sent | Recv | Best | Avrg | Wrst | Last |
|------------------------------------------------|------|------|------|------|------|------|
| FIOS_Quantum_Gateway.fios-router.home - 0 | 1043 | 1043 | 0 | 0 | 11 | 0 |
|lo0-100.CMDNNJ-VFTTP-317.verizon-gni.net - 0 | 1043 | 1043 | 0 | 3 | 352 | 0 |
| B4317.NWRKNJ-LCR-22.verizon-gni.net - 0 | 1043 | 1043 | 2 | 7 | 387 | 5 |
| 0.ae2.GW10.EWR6.ALTER.NET - 0 | 1043 | 1043 | 4 | 5 | 344 | 4 |
| 157.130.91.86 - 1 | 1016 | 1009 | 4 | 5 | 360 | 4 |
| nyk-bb4-link.telia.net - 0 | 1043 | 1043 | 4 | 6 | 312 | 5 |
| nyk-b5-link.telia.net - 1 | 1039 | 1038 | 5 | 7 | 371 | 6 |

No packet loss in this set, but I often get spiking pings on the first/second hop on the NJ devices.

Again, this problem manifests as an intermittent issue.  From the user's perspective, when this problem hits, all streaming will stop, websites won't load, etc.  Speedtests are normal and reflect provisioned speeds.  It's just everything stops working periodically: multiple times per day, sometimes for up to 10 minutes at a time, sometimes for just a few seconds.

Your response matches my experience.

I may try something like Opera VPN to see if different connection path I can log/validate different results and speed.

If I knew this behavior existed I would never have upgraded to Quantum - faster FIOS vs. my older service which might be slower but more stable/consistent.

Same problem here. Responding packtes delay can sometimes be few seconds, causing timeouts and failures when loading websites.

I'm using my own router and several of my devices are also experiencing the same issue. So the problem should either come from the optical fiber modem they provided or Verizon's edge routers (I'm in New York City).

Is there anyone from Verizon who can report this issue to engineers? I don't think we can solve it from customers' side.

How do I escalate this issue to NetEng or the NOC?  Or to support who understands what I'm talking about?  This isn't an issue with my ONT.  I mean, Verizon's welcome to waste their money replacing it if they want.

This is so regrettable as I never had these problems prior to switching to Quantum or "faster" service. Hindsight 20/20 would've stayed at slower but adequate speed.
