You do want to get off the gen 1 router to newer Verizon router.  Preferably on their dime.  You can definitely get a better wireless router or access point then Verizon supplies.  Wireless-AC are the newest but still fairly expensive.  Lots of choices for Wireless-N.  If you have TV service you pretty much must have a Verizon router in your setup.

No real need to get rid of the gen 1 router as it provides a perfectly adequate gateway,...

Gen 1's have a very small nat table see http://www.dslreports.com/faq/16233

I just got a new Actiontec M1424WR Rev I from Verizon.

Reading these forums, I see multiple references to various Generations.

Can't find any reference to which Generation mine is.  Can anyone help me discover the answer??

Many thanks.

Rev I is the latest.  It is the only M1424WR that is "n" compatible.

EDIT

My last statement is incorrect.  Left in so following comment makes sense.

Not sure why you san only the I is "n" compatible.  F of course is only draft N, but what about the rev G?

You are correct.  Don't recall where I got that, but I believed it without verifying.  Which was really easy to do.
