My Canon printer allows setup via a menu system on the printer itself.
And I have seen a number of others that are similar (besides Canon).

Yep I have the MG3320 by Canon. It connects wireless (air print) via menu but in certain setups it requires a USB connection to a laptop/desktop.

my ET-4500 Epson also hooks via menu setup, but it still has the USB connection if necessary.

for most wifi printers the simple driver for network use is better than installing the full setup package.

Thanks everyone for the replies.  I decided to keep the printer and plug it directly into my computer.  I already have a canon color ink jet that is on the my network that my wife can use via her computer.
