I have read messages of people saying they have bought a dual band router. They use that instead of the actiontec for their wifi. The secondary router gives them better performance. Is this a good idea or a waste of money?

That depends on which revision Actiontec you have and how much you value getting the best possible wifi speeds.

It would appear you have the dual antenna N band capable Actiontec MI424WR. This router will provide good signal strength in most dwellings and and will be twice as fast as a single antenna Actiontec B/G band router. I wonder if the folks who recommended an upgrade are doing so based on the performance of Actiontec routers of the same part number but with a single antenna and B/G band connectivity.

Caveat....
Two antennae does not mean "dual band"
Your network adaptors also need to be "dual band" capable.
