I recently switched to fios I personally love it,  however my mother in law doesn't. She works from home the majority of the time and has trouble logging into her VPN. I've noticed that many people  have had the same problem, I haven't had a chance to read all the post cause i'm chasing my toddler around, so i'm hoping that someone can give me some help. Thanks to any and all who help in advance.

Its a windows xp laptop and the VPN software is cisco. its weird because it works then stops working, what coould be the cause of that? she also keeps unplugging everything and re-plugging it i think because her i.t peoeple told her to.

Unfortunately she needs to have her IT dept concentrate on this issue. This is not a known problem and we have alot of employees and customers who VPN in without a hitch.  There are many variables on the IT side of her employer that need to be addressed by a knowledgeable rep.

I was thinking the same thing especially because it works more often than not, and i know its an old laptop, which could be the problem, so until she takes it in to her i.t dept what if anything can i do to make sure that it works, would using it wired make any difference?

I use a Cisco VPN (several different ones over the years) and usually if I have trouble it is related to a firewall, either McAfee firewall or Windows firewall.  Worth a try to disable it to at least try it out.  Not to keep it that way, but just to troubleshoot.

so i finally looked at my mother in law's laptop, the first problem was she wasnt even connected to the network, then when i did connect to it, it seemed to have dropped after ten minutes. And when i tried to find the network again it would not show up, now is this a probllem with xp? cause im working on another computer(my side job) and i tried to get it online, it would connect halfway as in it would say connected but in the status is showed sent , received had 0. Does Xp not like fios or what?

XP is 100% wifi compatible with FIOS..I would suggest changing the channell in your router to 11 to help in avoiding cordless phone interferences.  Is the laptop running a wireless utility to connect or is it windows services? What model Laptop?

When it says connected is it able to ping an IP on the Internet, and resolve domain names?

Also in regards to VPN. Way back there were issues reported of VPN connections having issues when the router was connected to the ONT through MOCA and not using Ethernet. I am not sure why, but some users VPN issues were resolved by having the Ethernet port enabled in the ONT and then running Ethernet to the router along side the coax.

Just to add to the thread, some common problems I have seen are in regards to network addressing inside the home and the office. If both networks are for example 192.168.1.x networks, you will see connection problems if the VPN service isn't set to handle that issue. According to friends that work in VPN installation and general network engineering, as long as you can connect to the internet, you should be able to connect to the VPN. Everything CAN be adjusted at the VPN service settings.

You can get more information by googling 'common vpn connection problems'.
