Does anyone know who I can contact to get Verizon to update their own Engineering records?!
I'm buying a new house and closing next week. The current owner informed me that Verizon laid fiber optic lines over a year ago along the road in front of the driveway (it's a very reasonable length driveway in case you're wondering) but they had just chosen not to use it. However, Verizon's records show that the only service available to me is the pathetically slow 1mbps DSL!
I have called customer support 3 times now. The first two times they opened "engineering tickets" to have my address updated and said I would receive a phone call or email within 48 hours but I waited a week both times with no response. The third time I called, today, the lady said there is no such thing as an engineering ticket and that all she could do was put me in to be "notified" when service is available. What in the world?? Why would they spend all this money laying lines and not actually allow me to use them when I want to?
Does anyone have any idea who I can contact that can actually get something done? The customer service rep today actually suggested that I ask a "local technician" when I see them! Like they are chilling at the bottom of my driveway waiting for me to flag them down and ask them a question?

You can't make FIOS give you service.
Go with the local cable company, my experience is that while "fiber" sounds great, on FIOS it comes in as fiber to your property and then gets converted to cable or ethernet before hitting your network. I cannot tell any difference between FIOS and the local cable company, so I am about to go back to cable to save $.

Thanks 9b909, unfortunately Comcast doesn't offer service to my address either. The only other options are DSL or Satellite (and I work from home via VPN so Satellite isn't going to provide the unlimited data and DSL won't provide the required speed). I was just hoping that someone might know some way or someone to contact that could help Verizon's left hand talk to its right... the fiber optic cables are already there and ready to hook up, they just don't seem to know about it, and I can't figure out how to get them to update their own records.

The next town over from us had the fiber installed about 4 years back. It's only in the last year that they have started converting customers.
How far are you from the CO. If you're close you should be able to get well above 1mb on dls.

I'm pretty far away, not sure how far though... they told me a max of 1.5Mbps where I am. OK that's good information, I really appreciate it! I just assumed since the fiber was right there that they should be able to turn it on.

You didn't say if any of your new neighbors have Verizon FIOS. Quite possible a optical cable (NOT FIOS local service) was run through your area. They do use it for longer distance connections.
Also possible they are still no ready to roll it out to your area, but are planning to. This is usually the case only in some areas they have commitments to install FIOS in. In general they are not planning to roll out to any new areas that they hadn't previously signed agreements with the local authorities.
And always possible you are on the wrong side of a street that represents some boundary.
They bad thing about request to have engineering check out, is they DON'T usually contact you about what they found out.
