I purchased a new cable modem and can't get it activated. I've called verizon several times and they won't activate it. They in fact say they don't activate anything. Don't they need the mac address to activate the modem so I can use it?

Verizon doesn't use Cable modems. Verizon DSL uses DSL modems, and Verizon FiOS uses routers without modems in them. Verizon Wireless LTE Connected uses an LTE Gateway, which contains a modem inside.
If you have FiOS service and are trying to use your own router, please see this FAQ for more information: https://www.dslreports.com/faq/verizonfios
