WEP won't Stick?

I have horrible wireless on service just installed Monday (Fios phone, internet,tv). Speed ok hardwired but falls apart un-tethered.  (get "link appears to be broken message 9/10 times). After two prior one hour marathons with tech support, I had my third today. Running XP Pro. While attempting to set WEP, tech said she thinks the problem is that the WEP key keeps going back to 8 characters vs the 10 we put in. I know we put in 10 and that 8 displays but I don't know if it's a Microsoft issue with the adapter or if Verizon's router is causing the issue. I tried uninstalling the adapter, re-booting, going back to the Connections but no matter what I do, only 8 characters display in the WEP Key field after I save (in Wireless Network Properties). Can anyone help?

did you try changing the wep key in the router to 000000000? if you are able to connect with that then something is wrong with the drivers in your card.  You may also want to try disabling the wep and see if that works.   Some cards will not work with the actiontech, what type of computer do you have?

if you are talking about the amount of dots that display for the WEP key in the wireless card's properties/software.... disregard that

if it connects at all, the WEP is entered and in there properly....

Use this software to try and help wiht intermittent wireless issues www.verizon.com/connect

reset the router... and if the issues persists, have tech support send you a new router

if the issue persists with a seond router, it is an issue with your PC/wireless card

Didn't try seting the router to all zero. Will try that. Using a Lenovo ThinkPad, running XP Pro. Card is Atheros 11 b/g wireless LAN mini pci express adapter III. Will post result of attempt to set router to zero.

Thanks

is your issue that the signal drops or you are not able to connect at all because rob pointed out you were able to connect but were getting bad signal and I thought you were having connection issues.

I am able to connect in that the Wireless Connection says I have excellent strength. I however can't go wireless. When I take out the ethernet, everything comes to a grinding halt. When I try to go to a website (including Verison) it is excessively slow. The great majority of the time (9/10) the icon at the bottom of the screen gets maybe two green bars and takes atleast a minute to get that far. Then, I get the explorer page that says "link appears to be broken". If I toggle back, then forward again, I can sometimes, (but rarely sometimes) get the page. The other thing that often happens, if after getting hung up, if I don't get the explorer "broken link" message, explorer takes me to Google and places the name of the site I had been looking for in it's Google search box. What's up with that?

Ran the in-home agent. It optimize and attempted to re-boot the router. I got an error message "error while rebooting.Call the dredded 1-888 #. Probably because I reset the WEP to 10 zeros

? Having to call these guys again is the last thing I want to do. The way they left it this afternoon, was that the problem is a Microsoft one because of the fact that I enter 10 characters and Windows Wireless Connection returns just 8, it's a MS problem. I did call MS and they want to charge. That's when I went surfing on my own  (hardwired of course) hoping I can figure it out. Before I call them I would be very very grateful if you can speak to the point about the return of 8 characters even though I enter 10. Verizon's hypothesis at first seemed logical (not retaining 10 that we put in so the card must be the problem). Are they blowing smoke up my skirt? Is the return of 8 characters typically what is suppossed to happen?

yeah the {please keep your posts courteous} you spoke with has no idea what they were talking about.... disregard basically EVERYTHING that person said

reset the router, try the in home agent, if that does not help, call and have them send a new rotuer....

again, if the new router has the same issue, then you know it is the PC/wireless card/software at fault

and in that case, yes, consult the PC manufacturer/wireless card manufacturer/PC repair type person

I just want to say thank you Bob. I've now been at this for four hours and before I toss all the Verizon equipment out in the trash, I think I'll stop for tonight. Will try your suggestions in the morning....Verizon leaves me far from impressed.
