Weird Internet connection Issues

Hello all, I talked to an Verizon support agent again earlier today about this issue that I have been having for quite some time now. The support agent pretty much went with the basics (Did you try turning off the router, downloading the optimizer, ect.) and did a speed test on the Verizon speedtest page. Like I have told other support agents before, it will always show 25 download and 27 upload no matter how weird my connection is acting at the time of testing. I know for a fact that this isn't can't be right because I would easily be able to watch a live stream on twitch.tv and video's on youtube or hulu with no issues at all but that is not the case. With video's that buffer it takes ages for them to load and live video is constantly choppy and i have to select their low quality options to be able to watch.

Downloads of any kind also take much longer than they used to for them to complete. The last time I had a tech to come over to check out our situation. After he left all was going well for about three days and then after that it started fluctuating again randomly. When this happens my download averages from 0.50-4.00 and and my upload at 4.00-9.00 with 148ms on ping (currently at ping: 137ms, dl:2.83, upload: 7.82). This is way lower than the 25/25 we are supposed to get but as the agents always tell me on the phone they go by their test site and I'm stuck with my slow speeds.

Hi partner, might I ask if the site (which I clicked on the linkto see your speed test) can be trusted. Truly I am not doubting your intellegence, just the integrity of the web site.

It could also be related to the browser your using. I am now having problems with a google related browser, that I didn't have 2-3yrs ago. Just out of curiosity have you tried your Verizon speed test.

Speedtest.net is a reliable sight.  Our speed was about the same on Verizon speedtest sight.  On both sights, our speed was greater than promised by Verizon!!!!!

It shouldn't be the browser I have tried the test's on both chrome and mozilla and they pretty much gave me the same results. Also the verison speed tests always say I have 25/27, but I know that can't be right since I can't watch live streams that are even at 2500 kbs without it chopping and downloads take ages.

Are you using a wifi or Ethernet / hardwired connection to your router?

I assume you're in Florida from the speedtest you posted....do you get the same results if you try a different server, other than Tampa?

Using hardwired to my router. When testing with the other servers in florida the results were pretty close to 25/25 execpt for Cocoa, FL (near 25 dl and half the upload) and Naples, FL (2 dl and 8 upload)

Ok.   If you're getting consistently good results on other speedtest.net servers then I suspect the problem you're having isn't local.  That is, there's nothing in your setup that causing the issue.

It sounds like there's something happening with that Tampa server, or the routing between you and it, that's causing those slower test results.

I see there are two speedtest.net servers in Tampa.   This is what I get with the Hivelocity host:

And this with the Rapid systems host:

Both pretty paltry.  By comparison, here's what I get with the Ft. Myers server:

I'm in New York, btw.  It surprises me to see those results from the Tampa servers.  Speedtest.net servers are usually reliable.  Again, it could be something going on in the backbone routing to the Tampa area, about which there's nothing you or I can do.

In the mean time, I'd avoid relying on the Tampa servers for any indication of how your  FiOS service is behaving.

Oh man, if there really isn't anything I can do then that's depressing :(. Also guessing that the only way to have a more stable connection would be to move closer to one of the other servers?

I don't have an answer to that question, but my guess is if there's something wrong with a switch, or server,  or something else in the routing you get in a particular direction, chances are it will eventually be discovered and correctedI've seen that happen numerous times in the past.

You can, of course, keep complaining to Verizon in the hope they'll track down the problem and correct it but that may also be an exercise in futility.

As a last resort,  if you have a friend or neighbor who has cable (Comcast?) instead of FiOS, you can check to see if they have the same problem you doIf not...maybe it's worth switching?

Or maybe one of the other regulars here will chime in with another suggestion.
