What's my current usage

How do I find out how much usage I currently have ?

a) download as well as upload (download is more important though)

b) over the last one month or last 3 months or ... (something that tells me more than "in the last one hour or session")

c) in Megabytes (not in terms of time)

I sent an email to Verizon and got irrelevant automated responses. They said I should reply back to that email since they keep track of this stuff and when I did, I got the same irrelevant responses back. 🙂

So, yeah mailing the so called automated person is worse than useless.

Why do you need your usage information? I don't think Verizon tracks FiOS users' usage statistics like that, since the service isn't on a charge-per-use basis.

While, "why I need it is" besides the point, 🙂 I'm happy to share why...

I may be travelling internationally and need to set up an internet connection in a different country where the billing is usage based.

So I'd like to know what my current usage is, so that I can extrapolate/interpolate and pick the correct plan.

Makes sense. They "why" was just curiosity on my part. As I said, I don't think Verizon tracks these stats for FiOS users. (I could be wrong though.)

There are several free apps available here for that purpose.

Didn't mean to bite your head off, for asking why. Sorry about that.

Most people wouldn't care about their usage (I certainly didn't) when you're on a "all you can eat" plan like Verizon has.

I suspect Verizon would track it though

a) for maintaining internal stats for improving on their infrastructure or

b) for general "law and order" type stuff - in case the "guvment" wants to know where a user has been tromping around.

I'm assuming of course, that they want to improve infrastructure and they want to keep all this data to help the "guvment" so the "guvment" can continue to give them federal contracts .. 🙂 Ok. Now I'm off in the weeds.. so I'll stop.

Thanks KaLin. However the few apps that are free at that link and track usage don't fit the need.

I have a mac, for instance that I use at work as well as at home. Assuming the apps work on a mac, they will be unable to distinguish my work usage from my home usage.

I have multiple computers at home and I'll have to install the app on each one of them.

I will have to start tracking the usage from here on - going forward. I will need the data relatively soon and the install and counting going forward may not help.

Hope that helps explain my situation better. Thanks again for the pointer.

Because these aren't managed services like t-1's or ds3's, verizon offers no proactive monitoring of these lines.

So for example if the line drops you aren't going to receive a call in x amount of time.   You have to call.   They don't have these stats for you, but there is a bunch of software out there as noted that you can collect some data.

Actually you can get to it with a little effort. The router keeps statistics. Log into the router, and go to

System monitoring>Advanced Status>Traffic Monitoring

And it will tell you what has been through the router since the router was booted last. If you want to get a running total each month, just reboot the router the first of each month (which isn't a bad idea anyway).
