According to the user manual
http://support.actiontec.com/doc_files/MI424WR_Rev._E_User_Manual_20.8.0_v3_GPL.pdf
USB Port
The USB port provides up to 5 VDC for attached devices (to charge a cell phone,
for example). In the future, with a firmware release upgrade, the USB host
functionality will be available for devices such as external storage and cameras.

The USB Port on the Router is provided to allow a User to connect a PC that does not have a Network Card.
I thought that I had seen a post somewhere else that indicated this, but I am unable to locate it.
It also can provide power for any USB Device.
