Why was I sent another router?

I called Verizon recently to cancel my TV service and received another router today. The guy I spoke with understood that I was in a "double play" plan, which means I already *had* FiOS internet. I then received an email that explained the first month charges, which alarmed me, but after speaking with someone else, they assured me those charges would not apply to me. I hope I am not charged for this additional router that I didn't ask for. Could I drop it off at a Verizon store? Sidenote: This router is in worse condition than the one I currently have (which was brand new when I got it). This new one has the model number rubbed off and whatnot. Why send me a used one?
