Wired connection very slow

I have Fios 35/35, but always got 50/50 when I did a speed test (Verizon doesn't offer the 35/35 anymore, so I guess I got the 50/50 upgrade free). For the last several months whenever I do a speed test, I get UNDER 14 mbps. This is with a wired ethernet connection going from the verizon router directly to my Windows 8.1 desktop computer. Upload speeds are about 40 mbps, but the download speeds are the problem. I haven't changed computers or any settings since I noticed the slow-down. Thanks for your help.

Okay, problem has been solved. I called tech support, and the network specialist found my connection was set up as a "cross connect" or something, so she reset the ONT and got the connection back to default. I'm guessing this happened when my box got replaced this past summer. Anyways, all is well now, I get 43/38 on the verizon speed test, so I'm happy again. Thanks for all the input!

I had a similar problem .several years ago a storm came through the east coast damaging alot of the connection boxes on the utility poles.mine retains rain water. several times a year a tech would come out and clean the coroded conections in the box and escalate a work order to replace the box LOL. after over 3 years you would think some one in management would say lets stop loosing customer and this cost ever several months but no. so thanks to verizon i now have comcast thats spelled no customer service but speed is many times faster and I pay the same.

I tested the connection using speedtest.net as well as the verizon test. No other windows were open and I wasn't downloading anything.

I had my box replced earlier this year as my internet kept going out.. wonder if it is related? I should also mention I get the exact same speed when I test my laptop and other wireless devices. I wonder why my speed is limited wirelessly as well as wired to the same 14mbps? How odd.

Which "box" was replaced?

Do you have TV service?

What speed is listed on your bill?  Verizon will give you exactly what you pay for.  If you have FiOS TV, you'll see an extra 10Mbps to cover VoD and other TV services.

Often the speedtest results aren't that good.  You should try different speed test sites as well as different servers on each site.

Another way to test is to download a big file from a well connected site.  A good example is a Linux install ISO image from one of the well supported Linux distros.  You don't have to install it, just download the file.  Then, monitor the transfer speed reported by your download program as well as the Windows Task manager.

If all of these tests continue to show 14Mbps download, you should contact Verizon.

Good Luck.

The outside box, attached to the back of my house, was replaced. Yes, I have TV service and it is fine. I pay for 35/35, and that's what's on my bill. In the past I have seen it reach 50/50, but the extra 10 mbps could very well be what you said. Either way, I'm getting nowhere near 35mbps either wired or wireless like I used to. I guess I'll have to contract the abysmal customer service department again. Boy oh boy, I can't wait for them to tell me to try and resetting my router over and over again....

I would reboot the ONT and router to see if that corrects the issue otherwise you will need to call Verizon to troubleshoot.

Sorry, what is the ONT? The router/modem is one combined unit.

That outside box is an ONT.  Somewhere is a box that is plugged into power for it.  Pull its power and  battery(assuming you have a battery installed).  Wait at least 20 seconds and put back the battery and plug it back in.

Good luck.

Gotcha, thanks! The battery pack/power is in my garage. I'll unplug everything for a minute and see what happens. I'll report back.
