Interference does sound possible.
Do you have any 2.4GHz cordless phones close to the router?
Try turning them off.
The new firmware is not on the public download area yet.
It should be at this URL shortly:

There is a file there now - 4.0.16.1.56.0.10.11.6-MI424WR.rmt just over 3mb
Doesn't do anything for me as I have a Westell 9100 but wonder if whatever they fixed on the AT will appear on the Westell too.
Bet there'll be a rash of issues showing on this board now

The newer version is: 4.0.16.1.56.0.10.12.3 and from the router you can go to advanced, Firmware upgrade and click check now to see if a newer version is available, assuming you don't have 12.3 already. The link provided previously is to download the older version of software.

BenPage has an Actiontec Gen 1 with the firmware currently on the site.
Westell firmware is also available on the site for manual install.

Whats the easiest way to disable the router so I can use another router and use the one I have solely as a modem?

The Verizon provided router is NOT a modem, its a router with built in wireless LAN capability.
Do you currently use the FIOS TV Service? If you do then you should continue to use the Verizon router which connects your Set Top Boxes together and provides them internet access for VOD and the Channel Guide.
If you don't have the FIOS TV service then you need to see if the connection into your router is Ethernet or COAX. If its Coax you need the router, if its ethernet than you can swap the router out with another brand.
The alternative is to keep the verizon router but bridge the new router, disable the Wireless on the verizon router, disable DHCP on the new router and define the wlan on the new router.
I'm sure other folks have comments about this but this is a start.

I would not recommend removing the FiOS router.
Verizon cannot provide you support if you do that - even if you do not have video.
However, it is fine if you want to login to your FiOS router and turn off the wireless.
Before you connect your router to it, you will need to make sure your router:
1) does not use the IP address 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.99 is a good IP to use)
2) does not run a DHCP server
After you reconfigure your router, connect it to the FiOS router using an Ethernet cable from one LAN port to the other LAN port. Many people make a mistake here. You will not be using the WAN port of your router.
This setup will allow you to use your router as a wireless access point.
You can also buy wireless access points, but they seem to be more expensive for some reason.
I actually use an Apple Time Capsule (like and Airport Extreme with a hard drive) in my house for all wireless and have turned off the FiOS router's wireless.
