Worried about FiOS Internet Speeds

I have approximately 3 computers (1 laptop, 2 desktops) at my house. Both of the desktops use a Adapter.

First Desktop uses a G-220 v2 ZyXEL Wireless Adapter

Second Desktop uses a  G-220 v3 ZyXEL Wireless Adapter

My problem:

I'm paying for 25 Mbps download and 15Mbps upload, and right now, the laptop + first desktop is getting around 16-21Mbps download and 7-9Mbps upload. Now my Second Desktop is getting speeds around 4-10Mbps download and 3-5Mbps upload, all desktops and laptops are using the same connection, I have no idea why my speed is so low. Both desktops are in the same place, same room, etc. I'm the one who needs the best internet connection, but I'm getting the lowest. Please help me or let me know how I can improve my speeds, no applications are running whatsoever.

Is it possible for a desktop to detect a wireless internet service without using a adapter? That would help probably since the laptop isn't using an adapter, and it's getting 16-21Mbps/7-9Mbps., still not full speed however.

Regards.

Which Verizon FIOS Wireless Router are you using and where is it locatated in relation to the other desktop/laptop computers ?

Can you plug one of the desktops into the router with an ethernet cable and see what the speeds are ?

A Desktop Computer could not detect a wireless network without some type of adapter or card.  A Laptop could have a card built in and would be able to pick up a wireless network if this were the case.

Wireless Connectivity is going to have overhead that will reduce the speed and is subject to further reductions caused by distance and intereference from other sources.

Did you run the Verizon FIOS Optimizer?

I had slow u/d times on the other computers other than the one the installer used and once I ran the optimizer, all was well on the others.

Try it and see.

Here is the link:

I am unable to plug an ethernet cable into the desktop because the router is 10 or more feet away from the desktop. I'm using the Verizon FiOS Actiontec Router. When the verizon fios installation guy came in, he was aware it was far away from the desktop, he looked like he knew what he was doing. Both desktops are next to each other, so how come one desktop is getting more speed then the other is what I'm wondering.

I haven't used the speed optimizer, I just used it now, I'm going to restart my computer now and post the results, but I use Firefox not Internet Explorer if that has anything to do with anything.

I can't seem to find the edit button anywhere on IE. Anyways, just used the optimizer and restarted my computer and I see no difference. The first desktop is the desktop where the FiOS was originally installed.., so that desktop is getting higher speeds then the second desktop regardless of location..? The laptops get the same speeds as the First Desktop. I use the second desktop, is there any way I can have my brother's computer (First Desktop) to change connections somehow? We're both located next to each other, so its definitely not the distance that's effecting the internet speeds..

Ah, I found the edit message button now, also:

Second Desktop Ping = 26ms

First Desktop Ping = 10ms

We're both in the same location, different adapters by version..!!

What Verizon sold you was the capacity of the pipe that connects your router to the world. There are a large number of factors that can reduce the actual data rate between your computer and the web site you are connected to. The actual data rates you get from various speed tests can vary enormously depending upon the time of day, and available bandwidth on the network route that was used for that particular test.

For example I have a 20/5 connection. The only downloads that gets anywhere near the 20mbps rate are some from iTunes and Microsoft. I have some speed tests that end up as low as 8/1 mbps, and others that are actually slightly faster than 20/5 I am supposed to have. So I don't have a lot of faith in speed tests, and neither should you.

What you really need to do is connect to the router, and see what data rate it has negotiated with the ONT and/or CO.

There is in fact considerably latency involved with wireless operation (especially if you use any form of encryption), and you haven't mention whether you are running 802.11b or 802.11g wireless. 802.11b is in fact considerably slower than 802.11g.

I don't think the Actiontec supports 802.11n (and it isn't an 'official standard' yet).

I use http://www.speedtest.net/ and http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest and the Verizon FiOS Speed Test, I also run a dedicated server (not from my house) to test my download speeds, 500 KB/s - 1.1 MB/s
