My xbox is connecting to my PC and the internet through a wireless connection. When I try to setup the media center connection it says my console is connected to an 802.11b or 802.11g wireless network. Further it says I can support 802.11a for best performance. What is the difference? Could this be causing the xbox to hang during online play?

it's possible, G is the best
set it for G, if the problem still exists, you might have a problem where you need to portforward.
go to the xbox section and follow the tutorial.
