Tom , THe solution posted assumes you have or want battery backup.

If the OP doesn't.  unplug the bbu, and pull the battery wires from the battery.  Remove it.  Blug the BBU back in.  IF the alarm goes off push the reset.  All but the oldest versions should not continue to alarm.  If yours is one of the old ones, Verizon was replacing them if you call them with one that will allow you to run with an alarm when you don't have a battery.

If you want the Battery backup, then unless you have had a long period without power, the Battery should continue to be able to be recharged for many years.  It normally gets little use and so many have reported 5 years PLUS.  You can get a replacement from many sources for much less the price that Verizon charges.
