For the past few days my FiOS connection in Central NJ has been unable to complete connections to www.qx.net and much of the content at fark.com is borked. It very much looks like an asymmetric routing problem. It only happens on FiOS connections in my neighborhood. ATT, CenturyLink, VWZ, Cablevision all work. FiOS connection works for my friend in CA.

Nope, it wasn't DNS, it was a bad route after all. I had to release and request a fresh IP twice before I got an address in a netblock that would route properly. There's another thread here that suggests the same thing happening for some FIOS to EarthLink connections.

You can try using OpenDNS http://www.opendns.com/opendns-ip-addresses/ .
