avast reports Verizon speed optimizer as a WIN32:EVO-gen virus

I've tried to install the Verizon speed optimizer tool from http://my.verizon.com/services/SpeedOptimizer/FiOS/FiosOptimizerDownload.aspx?CusType=

74.107.187.63?

When I try to install it, Avast blocks it as a WIN32:EVO-gen virus, I've tried to add it to the avast excluded from scan list, it will not let me install this, My computer was infected by the vista 2010 security virus when the tech tried to install in home agent from his flash drive, which took me a day and 1/2 to get my computer back online and clean, so I don't really want to push my luck here and list it as a false positive and run it, has anyone else had this with their antivirus program?

I find it hard to imagine that if you're getting the Optimizer tool from the actual website, the Optimizer is to blame. Yet again, it could have a vulnerability in it that resulted in the Antivirus 2010 infection you had. Likewise that's a common thing for Internet Explorer to catch anyways, especially with out of date plug-ins.

Many have run the Optimizer without an issue, myself included, but to tell the truth, unless you're not getting your full speed to any website and you're running an operating system older than Windows Vista (basically, if you have a Windows XP machine) you shouldn't need to run the Optimizer.

Some antivirus programs are now blocking files based on type of activity rather than it's signature.  The Verizon optimizer modifies windows files.  That is why Avast is calling it a Virus.  You should contact Avast and report this as a false positive.  Then they will be able to correct their program to allow it.

Alternatively, you could follow Smith6612's advice.  I ran the optimizer on a WIN7 computer twice. Once it did nothing. Once my speedtest results decreased slightly.  So unless you actually have a problem, I would not recommend it.
