computer very slow

I have had FIOS for at least 6 years, with the same router.

I did a speakeasy speed test and  5 mg's upload, 7 mgs download.

I have a icon on my laptop that shows internet speed and its never full bars (it is bars, no I'm not talking verizon wireless) is it possible I need a new router.  I do use my laptop wirelessly.  I'm thinking I might need a new router.  Anybody agree?

5 mg what.  5 megabits per second (5 mbps) or 5 megabytes per second (5 mBps).  What do the bars represent?  if the scale goes to 100 mbps (a common lan speed) it of course would never go very high.  And what speed do you pay for.

Remember you are talking to peers here and we have no idea what you have.

I wonder if those bars don't represent wifi signal strength, rather that speed.

carolynd1....What model router do you have now, including the Rev letter?  You can find that info on the label on the router.

What operating system is your laptop running?  Windows 7?  XP?  Windows 8?  Etc.

For troubleshooting purposes, can you plug your laptop into your router via Ethernet cable to see what speed you get?  If so, tell us what speeds you get running a test at www.speedtest.net.

And, as TNS_2 asked, what speed plan are you subscribed to.
