The firmware from d-link comes with some minimal release notes at http://tsd.dlink.com.tw/temp/PMD/6577/DSL-6300V_VZ_1.01_ReleaseNote.pdf .  They describe changes to the initial release of the firmware, but don't really tell you what the firmware does..  One note on 2011/02/25 gives a new default http password, but a later one on 2011/03/11 removes the web gui, which is presumably what the http password was used for.  There are references to both gui and webgui, which are most likely the same thing, but conceivably not.  With no gui, is there still some non-graphical interface?   Telnet, perhaps?

Yes, I would guess that the firmware is meant to be installed from a workstation plugged into the ethernet port.  I can't see any reason why the verizon router, which after all is a linux computer plugged into the ethernet port, couldn't serve as such a workstation if verizon wanted it to.  Documentation for other d-link modems/routers, along with those from other manufacturers, sometimes mentions the possibility of remote management, which would take place over the internet, so via the twisted pair connection.  D-link sensibly advises users to leave remote management disabled by default, and probably the other manufacturers do too.  But I don't know any way to tell whether verizon's firmware for the 6300v provides the possibility of remote management or whether it is enabled.  They certainly enable remote management for their g1100 router and, as discussed elsewhere, they don't let you disable it.

The thing is that it is easy enough for verizon to keep me from finding out what arrangements they have made for tapping into the boxes they have installed in my apartment.  My understanding of networking is pretty basic and I don't know how to go about cracking passwords, disassembling firmware, etc..  But there are a lot of ingenious full-time bad guys on the internet who are going to be a lot better at finding out than I am, and it is them, rather than verizon itself, that I am concerned about protecting myself from.

Well, I have found a user manual of sorts at https://fccid.io/document.php?id=1452587 .  It's not very helpful.  Basically it says to plug the modem in and attach one socket to the phone jack and the other to a computer using the appropriate cables..  It does say that if you want to change the modem's configuration, you should make sure that the computer is configured to have a static ip.  However there is nothing about what in the configuration is changeable or how to go about changing it.
