iPod Touch 2nd Gen causes my 9100EM Router To Reboot

I just got FiOS last week. At first we (my wife, the verizon techs, and I) thought I had a defective modem as it kept rebooting every few minutes and sometimes twice in a minute. They replaced it and it has been great for the past couple of days. Tonight, my wife tries to sign on to the internet on her iPod touch and all of a sudden the router rebooted again. I let it finish booting and connecting, I then had her try to go to another webpage on her iPod and as soon as she hit go the router rebooted. Has anyone else come across this or have any ideas why this would happen. It seems crazy to me. Before FiOS I was running off a good 'ol Linksys WRT54G with no problems.

The security I have in place for the wireless is WPA w/TKIP.

Any ideas would be appreciated. I'm a systems engineer by trade and this even has me stumped.

Ok! The Verizon tech came out last night and after about an hour of brainstorming we finally came up with a resolution....not to use their router anymore. My setup is a little different then most I think due to how my Apartment Complex is wired. My FiOS internet actually comes through the phone line and not ethernet nor coax. So I have an extra piece of equipment.

My original setup was this:

Internet coming from a phone jack into the ZyXel modem.

Cat5 coming from the ZyXel going into the 9100em.

DVR coax for connectivity going into the 9100em.

My setup now:

Internet coming from a phone jack into the ZyXel modem.

Cat5 coming from the ZyXel going into my Linksys

Cat5 coming from the Linksys going into a Motorola PIM or PEM (it looks like a digital adapter for a TV but is different)

DVR coax for connectivity going into the PIM or PEM

I can now get online successfully with my iPod! Woo Hoo!

But we broke something in the process. lol. I can no longer access my DVR from FiOSTVCentral. I'll be posting another thread on this issue.

Too attempt to narrow down the cause  change your security from WPA to unsecure and test and then change from unsecure to wep and test.

Yea, I thought about that this morning. I'll try it tonight and let you know.

Thanks,

I have tested different ways with the iPod. The router will be fine as long as the network is unsecured. As soon as I put WEP or WPA back on and try to access anything on the iPod after joining the network the router reboots. This is definately a router issue as we have used this iPod on my Linksys for over a year without a problem and are able to join many other networks as we travel without any issues. I just know what it could be as this is now our second router (the first one was replaced).

Any ideas?

Now it seems not to be an issue with just the iPod. Last night our laptop (wireless) was working fine. This morning we attempt to get online with it and everytime we connect and try to go to a webpage the router reboots. I have even put the wireless security to none and it still reboots the router. Mind you this is our second router since we started the service 2 weeks ago. My desktop (wired) works fine and does not reboot the router. Again, I never had any problems with my Linksys using my cable provider's internet in the years that I have had it so it is definately something with this router, router setup, and/or service. I'm at my wits end and about to just cancel FiOS all together and go back to cable. What could be the issue??

The router has a small/tiny NAT table,I point you to All DSR (dslreports.com) FAQs » Verizon Online FiOS FAQ » 3.0 Networking ->  What are the tradeoffs between the various router configurations
I wonder if that is why that is happening...

I looked at the link but this is if I have popped another router on with my Verizon router. Although I am looking to do this...I haven't yet. I am strickly running off of the Verizon provided wireless router. So I don't think that link helps me at all.

I do not have any ideas what would be causing your iPod to crash the Router, but I do have a work around.

You can use your Linksys in addition to the Westell.

I have the same configuration (Linksys WRT54G), except with the Verizon Actiontec Router.

The simplest way would be as follows:

Assuming that your Westell is configured with an internal address of 192.168.1.1, configure the Linksys so that it has an Local Address of 192.168.1.2.  You will also want to disable the DHCP Server on the Linksys and change it from Gateway Mode to Router Mode.

The Westell will remain as the Primary Router, which is 100% supported by Verizon.

Logon to the Westell and turn off the Wireless Portion.

Connect Lan Port 1 of the Westell to Lan Port 1 of the Linksys.  You can still use the other 3 ports of the Westell if needed.

All other devices can be connected to the Linksys and your wireless connectivity and security will be thru the Linksys.

This is Option 3 of the FAQ that dslr595148 mentioned (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/verizonfios/3.0_Networking).

LOL, thanks Brian...that is the route I'm looking to go and you're already helping me in the other thread I started on that exact idea

Use Linksys WRT54G with 9100EM.

Had another thought...would an over abundance of connections cause the behavior I'm seeing?

I just remembered that I did a bittorrent download overnight last night. And this morning is when we were seeing the troubles.
