ntp time service blocked?

using the default fios internet dns servers (71.242.0.12, 71.252.0.12)- it seems the actiontec routers "network time" protocol seems to be blocked.

it always fails when you try to sync time on the router.

if i change to a different set of dns servers, then i can get "ntp" to pull the current time and date.

why is this function blocked by verizon??

thanks, rich

While I do not know why that is happening, I will tell you what I noticed...

When I used the tool from http://www.grc.com/dns/operation.htm

Those DNS Servers showed up as Orange.

Perhaps, that has something to deal with it?

I see what you mean...

both verizon dns  servers show a context/status message of:

Bad domain names are intercepted by provider

very interesting.. that is probably the issue.

Go to Access Control in FIOS router's interface and add NTP protocol for your broadband connection which will open TCP port 123.

That won't work.  I have my FiOS connected up to my own router and I've enabled Port 123 and its still blocked.

Which allows them to "advertise" every time you mistype a URL. Use other DNS servers and you'll get the proper 404 bad url page.

Sigh..

There are outbound ports and inbound ports.

The rest of the people in this thread are talking about outbound NTP time service blocked.

Directons - For the purpose of not hi-jacking this thread:

#1 Start a new thread in http://forums.verizon.com/t5/FiOS-Internet/bd-p/FiOS_Internet

#2 The subject line should be something like Inbound NTP Blocked?

#3 In the body of the message, please include what the brand and model of your router is.

Not sure about when the original post were done, but I have had no trouble reaching the NTP servers, and the Actiontec router itself is reaching them without a problem for its time update.

Worked!  For some reason setting the firewall security to HIGH also removes time settings.  MEDIUM allows NTP, but one can add NTP to the HIGH setting.

This is on the FiOS-G1100 router.

thanks.
