Verizon does not use MODEMS they use ROUTERS.
the set up is Central Office-ONT in the home-ethernet from ONT to Fios router.
now if you have tv service you must have the Fios router to get the guide and on demand features to the Set top box.
if internet only you can use any router you wish. And even then you need a MOCA adapter and a splitter to use your own router to the tv services I mentioned above.
simple hook up is go into the Fios router 192.168.1.1 enter your login and password and go to the dns settings and do a release. But quickly unplug the Verizon router or it will grab the dns again. Simple process after that is plug in your own router, plug in ethernet cable into WAN port on your router then turn on power to router.
verizon sends dns to your router and then you should be on the net.
http://www.netgear.com and search for other ways to connect. Access point mode may be easier. Search at Netgear
As Jon said, you'll have to either connect your Nighthawk to the Verizon ONT, or put the Nighthawk in AP mode.

If you aren't interested in setting up the Nighthawk as a standalone router and only want it as a WiFi booster, then please see this page from Netgear: https://kb.netgear.com/24104/How-do-I-change-my-Nighthawk-router-to-AP-mode-after-I-ve-already-run-s...
