stalled downloads

For the last week I have been unable to download updates for video games (Wildstar & now Guild Wars 2). Please see the following post recently on the GW2 forums:

Please advise when this will be resolved. I shouldn't have to mess with VPN or my DNS settings to update a game.....

So I was able to download the update in less than 30 seconds at 6am. Why couldn't I do so last night in prime time? This is ridiculous and it has happened on 3 seperate occasions in the last week (once with Wildstar, twice with GW2).

Hard to say what the problem is here. Please try changing your DNS Servers to Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) for the sake of troubleshooting first. You could be either coming across DNS issues if the patch requires hitting several servers, or congestion if it's one (passing) lookup, and download one big file.

I am hearing fron NCsoft that there are many complaints that on patch day FIOS customers are not able to download and update their game. If you wait till the next day it works fine. I ask that Verizon look into this issue and provide a solution. I have a high speed plan so I can get my game on and delays are bad. 😞

This stall in downloading has too been happening for the 4th night in the row from 7pm to 12am, east coast, with no resolution by changing to Google DNS servers.

The hosts file change fixed it for me.   Quick and easy.  Thanks to the OP!

This is an official response from Guild Wars 2 that i recieved from their support.

Our network team has been investigating this issue and has confirmed that the issue is not due to any issue on our side. In our opinion, the root of the problem is most likely at Verizon FIOS end, especially since we have been getting similar reports from other players using the Verizon FIOS network.

Our suggestion would be to try bypassing your ISP's provided DNS servers and instead, use the following instructions so your computer connects to the Google public DNS system:

Regardless of if this helps, we urge you to report the issue to your ISP directly. Generally the more of these reports an ISP receives, the quicker they will address the issue. Additionally, players have provided some workarounds in the reddit thread and forum posts linked below that may be of use. Please be aware that player provided workarounds are not endorsed by Arenanet or NCSOFT and using them will be at your own risk.

Well, I tried the DNS thing during the peak hours 7pm to 12am, when I had to download the patch, and it didn't work.  I hope that some verizon tech can answer this problem for me, so that the next time I have to download during primetime, I won't have to wait.
