1080p anytime soon?

Just curious if anyone knows if Verizon will be offering 1080p programming or VOD movies anytime soon?  I know that Dish is advertising this now, so I imagine Verizon can't be that far behind.  With badwidth allowed by FIOS, I would think this would be easily possible.  I think a lot of their programming is already 1080i since they don't compress the signal.  Just curious about future 1080p programming...

The spec sheets on the Motorola set-tops don't show support for any resolution above 1080i.

It may be possible for the new 7216 and 7100 do display 1080p since the boxes could utilize it as they both use mpeg-4 compared to the 6200 and 6416 with mpeg-2. This is the best answer I can give at this time. If I get additional info I will be more than happy to share that here.

I had mpeg-4 channels on DirecTv and they were horrible compared to the mpeg-2 channels for sports viewing.

The new systems will not do 1080p. I just got mine on sat. They may have upscaling to 1080p, but that's not true 1080p. You will not see anyone broadcast in 1080p for a long time. 1080p take about 10x the bandwidth that 1080i does.

DISH does not have regular broadcasting in 1080p, but they are already offering VOD in 1080p.  I think the selections are extremely limited at this point, but the ball is rolling...

Dish is in a game of their own, they use "wireless" signal from space. It does not have the same limitations as a physical line. Plus VOD is a lot different then 1080p on fox or abc that has a constant stream of signal. VOD can use a buffer system much like watching netflix or internet video. And who knows what compression rate, and how good the Dish signal is. Remember Fios does not compress, or does very little, so the bandwidth used by another carrier would a lot less then Verizon.

I believe DISH sends the 1080p VOD during off-peak (night) usage hours.  You can watch it the next day from your DVR.

Like I said, limited at this point, but the ball IS rolling...

You know, sometimes when I read about resolution differences with FIOS ( 1080i vs.1080p for instance ) I think maybe I'm living on a different planet than other viewers. The HD movies and shows that I'm viewing now coming from FIOS appear to be 1080P. I'll admit right from the getgo I'm a fanatic when it comes to picture quality. My TV and A/V receiver were purchased with the 'spare no expense' mentality to achieve the best picture. I figured if I was going to have them for a while I might as well go top-drawer. The other night FIOS had 'Lawrence of Arabia' broadcasted on one of my HD channels. The image was, in a word, stunning! No, it was beyond stunning: the clarity, sharpness, color, contrast and depth of detail, was eye-poppingly perfect! Not to mention the sound which was excellent.

No, I'm not crazy. The image quality of that movie was truly exceptional. But I see that same quality staring me in the face every night with all my HD viewing. Even bad movies hold my attention because they look so good. Does anyone else using FIOS have similar experiences? Am I alone up here?

Maybe it's the hook-up ( all new cable installed in the neighborhood just three months ago ) or maybe it's my high-end electronics or maybe it's just my positive Karma- I don't know. But if what I'm watching isn't a 1080P image- even though I'm being told here that it's impossible to achieve with the FIOS electronics- well, I'll eat my remote.

What's really odd is that after watching a 'Lawrence of Arabia' or 'The Elephant Man' ( another eye-popper even in B&W ) on FIOS I make a mental note to check the prices of the Blu-Ray discs for purchase only to discover the films themselves aren't even on Blu-Ray yet! Go figure that one out.

The likelihood is that your a/v receiver is upconverting the signal from 1080i to 1080p. Its not true 1080p. But some do a **bleep** good job at it. And as far as the movie not being on blu-ray, it would cost them to much to manufacture the move, with out a lot of people buying it. Take Iron Man, the highest blu-ray sales to date. 7.2 mil on DVD and only 500k on blu-ray. So if you think what the older movies would sale there would be next to nothing.
