I just find it interesting they mention Cablevision specifically in their story. It just seems like an attack on one provider. Perhaps Verizon will need to pay $2.49 per household. After all Verizon was supposed to stop distributing the SD STB to new customers, and move everyone to the higher priced HD boxes. What other providers are paying them? It seems like patents they came up with sat on never developed and now are going after selected companies to make money. I wouldn't put it past Cablevision to stir up trouble for Verizon and say, look what they are doing, are they paying you, like we do? Yes the Law suite was filed a while back, but Verizon has been working for a while regarding getting Cablevision to comply with FCC rules regarding channel distribution.
Watching the Caps-Rangers game on CSN HD today really makes me appreciate that Comcast isn't quite as scummy with their regional sports networks as Cablevision is. From what I understand, CSN Washington HD is distributed terrestrially, so Comcast could have been pulling the same thing that the fantastic owners of the Rangers have been. Comcast continues to discriminate somehow with CSN Philly, but I guess at least they're consistent in only discriminating against satellite providers.
ActiveVideo is an early inventor of interactive television technologies like VOD and widgets. They supply several companies, including Cablevision, with their technology. Verizon started the legal fight by suing ActiveVideo's customer CableVision. After Verizon filed their suit, ActiveVideo sued Verizon. The jury learned that Verizon studied the ActiveVideo technology before, during, and after it launched its FiOS network. The Jury rejected Verizon's excuses and ordered it to pay for using the ActiveVideo technology. The injunction and royalties just ordered by the Judge is further proof that ActiveVideo had a strong case.
I posted about this on page 3, but Cablevision and MSG have asked for another emergency stay, this time of the FCC's Order affirming the Media Bureau's order. The FCC has asked the court to assign the same panel to hear this so they can deny it without agument. This gives MSG and Cablevision yet another couple weeks to delay access to its HD feeds. You probably won't see the channels until around the new year.
You're not asking for much at all. I'm really spoiled by being a fan of a team whose ownership really believes in maximizing the team's exposure and who truly wants the best production of the games to be seen by as many people as possible. It's such a shame that MSG is more interested in its affiliated cable company than serving the fans who support it. It's even more sad that MSG holds the TV rights for three other NHL teams whose fans have to suffer because of the Dolans' self interest.
