Manual recordings cutting off early

I was watching the Olympics the other night but since they're on so late EST I set the DVR to record the remainder (simply hit the "record" button on the remote) so I could catch the rest the next day.  There is now a recording of the Olympics on my DVR as expected, but it cuts off when the time display says there are 57 minutes left in the recording.  If you fast-forward to that 57-minute mark, it simply starts over from the beginning.  What happened to the final 57 minutes of the presentation?

Sometimes the guide is segmented and the recording will only record up until the end of the segment, even though coverage continues beyond the segment. Also, there is sometimes a break in my area for the news at eleven

I find it is best to consult the guide when any sporting event is in progress. I usually press record on the next program to allow for any delays or overtime.
