Netflix is the way to go - especially if your family has an Xbox 360.  While not all encompassing, the Netflix VOD service has a huge selection of movies that you can queue and stream to your 360 for your basic $8.95 per month subscription.  Honestly, we've had a DVD unwatched from Netflix sitting there for about 6 months now because we've found plenty to watch with their VOD.

If you don't have a 360 or don't want one, you can get the Roku dedicated Netflix STB for $99, or either of the Tivo Series 3 units have Netflix built in now too (though you have to pay for Tivo and Netflix I believe).
