ON SCREEN GUIDE MENU - TERRIBLE

Does anyone know if Verizon has a plan to upgrade their on-screen Guide Menu? I have nearly perfect eyesight and even I have difficulty seeing the details let alone other family members! With the different colors, small print detail, etc...., this has me longing for my Comcast Menu Guide.

My wife and kids hate it and wished we hadn't made the switch. Everyone agrees that content, and picture quality are good but the experience falls way short due to the current menu/guide.

Should this remain when my contract is up, I can definitely seem myself switching back to Comcast. Boy, it's gonna be a long two years!

I agree with you 100% as do a lot of other people who were pretty upset with the new changes to the guide. The 1.8 IMG (interactive media guide) was far better than their joke of a guide which they now have. There is a whole section where people have been ranting and raving about how much they hate the new guide where the colors and especially the size of it is too small for most people. I too had no issues with my eyesight either and still do not until i try to read verizon's guide. The other day i saw that someone had comcast when i went over to their place and i decided to take a look at it and their guide where i was actually impressed by how readable it was plus all of the data that was on their guide actually matched what the guide indicated should be there. Verizon has a better picture and they have widgets too but when it comes to the guide comcast is way superior to them.

I disagree 100% with both of the prior posts this thread. I find the Guide, and for that matter all the parts, of the new 1.9 IMG to be very readable. I have a 6+ year old HD 'TV and evrything is very readable, even without my glasses (I am very nearsighted). And on my two SD TVs, which I have connected to HD STBs, the Guide is also very readable, although obviously not as good as on an HD TV.

My guess is that you both of you have some setting wrong. It is easy to do, there are lots of settings, and some will definitely affect the readability of the IMG screens.

I suggest both of you, and all of the really very few others who feel it is not readable, to do some investigation on making the proper settings for your environment. I believe verizon has somewhere between 3 1/2 and 4 million FiOS TV customers; don't you think that if so many were so unhappy this place would be overrun with complaints? But it isn't, there have certainly been some, and I bet most have been precipitated by their simply not having the settings right.

And of course if you just can't live with it you can also I guess switch to another provider, but I don't understand the complaints, I watch my TV to watch TV programs, not spend my time looking at the Guide or other parts of the IMG and then complaining.

Just my opinion of course, as someone who things the 1.9 IMG is a big, big step forward in function, usability, and readability.....

Justin,

This could not possible be a surpirse to you since you've posted on a number of threads which do nothing but complain about the on-screen guide! I've never been so unhappy about a product that I've taken the time to post on a site. Frankly, there are hundreds, if not thousands, that hate the guide.

No argument from me at all on that, there probably are hundreds, maybe thousands, that hate it - out of 3 1/2 to 4 million! So your point is?

Have you actually made any attempts at all to fix your issues, or do you just want to complain? And if you have tried, what have you tried? If you tell us specifically what environment you have (TV type, STB models, video settings, etc.), what you have tried changing and what the results if any were, perhaps someone here can help you adress your issues. I am sure there are lots of people here that would try to help if you give them a chance (including me, whether you believe that or not).

I just came back to this thread thinking I might add a little more to my last post when I realized that you had asked a very reasonable question in your first post that I had neglected to try to address at all.

First, you need to keep in mind that this is a user-helping-user forum, so anything I or any other customer says is not based on any specific knowledge of Verizon's plans, which they generally keep secret until they make what it is available. However, Verizon has said that there will be an update to the 1.9 level of the IMG, and rumor (repeat, rumor) has it that it will be "soon", maybe meaning April or May 2012, maybe not. And Verizon generally rolls out updates to specific areas of the country gradually, spread over a period of few weeks or months, or even longer in the case of the rollout of 1.9, so how long it will be before you (or I) get any new level is unknown.

What will be in the update? Again, I don't know. But certainly Verizon is aware that there are some who feel that some changes are needed in the STB interface:

1) Different colors, maybe the ability to select a palete from a pre-configured list, or even let the user select individual colors for specific parts of the interface.

2) Text size adjustments by the customer.

3) Display time specification by the customer for the Info banner that is displayed when you change channels or hit the OK or FiOS TV buttons. Again though, primarily some way for the customer to specifiy what he/she wants.

4) Changes in the VOD menus and choices. I gather that this is a work in progress now, based on the suit that Verizon is dealing with over their VOD implementation.

5) Delivery of content using MPEG-4 compression. As I understand it, this will require replacement of the QIP6xxx STBs because they do not have the hardware support. Apparently this replacement strategy has already started for users with the MLB Extra Innings package; I have no idea when they might start actually delivering that content or other content using MPEG-4.

6) There are a number of "bug fixes" and probably some new function that is supposed to be included. One last time I have to plead ignorance, but I am hoping there will be some new stuff in addition to fixes.

I hope this helps a little bit. I guess maybe I came on a little too strong in my first two posts here, but honestly, from my perspective as a 6 1/2 year user of FiOS TV, I find it to be a terrific product, and despite my vision flaws I really can see the new Guide and other parts of the STB interface better now than I could with the previous 1.8 level of the interface.

as a new fios customer, I am very disappointed with it.  the menu color contrast is poot and makes it difficult to read.  the blue and white are too close on the color wheel.  combine that will the small lettering and the menu experience is very poor.  wish I could change the letters and background to black on white.  why can we change the cc colors but not the menu colors and letter sizes for us "old farts"?

Why don't you call Verizon technical support and ask?
